Miss Jones-Australia bound
« on: Monday 25 January 16 10:01 GMT (UK) »
An interesting entry in the Brithdir Girls School log book for 31 March 1926 read that Miss W.L. Jones certified assistant left for Australia.  Can someone please help find any details of her departure; name of ship etc.

Thank you

Hello Ellenmai
Thanks for taking interest in my post.  I'm afraid at this moment in time, that is all I have.  I am making an effort to trawl through the school log with the hope of at least finding her full name, but as I speak (type) she has always been referred to as Miss Jones.  I intend visiting the archives again soon to delve further but as of now I am sorry but there is no other details.

The fact that she left the school at the end of March I would assume she embarked sometime in April and her occupation of school teacher are the two pieces I have to work on at the minute.

Hello Ellenmai
An entry in the school log for 12 July 1920 offers a clue to Miss W Jones.  "Miss Winnie Jones  commenced duties here today; she has been a student at the Barry Training College."  I presume Winnie is short for Winifred.  That is as good as it gets I'm afraid.

Hi Roy
Mrs W L Jenkins aged 26, housewife, sails to Melbourne Australia on 30 April 1926 with her husband Mr L. Jenkins, farmer, aged 26. The home address is given as Heolddu Uchaf Farm, Bargoed

I can see Lydric Jenkins born 1900 in the census at the same address as above, father is farmer Lewis Jenkins. There is also a school admissions log book that gives his dob as 2nd Dec 1899 for Lewis School for Boys in Pengam.

Winifred L Jones and Lydric Jenkins marry in Cardiff in the 2nd quarter (April/May/June) of 1926

I wonder if they returned later as there is a death recorded in Merthyr for 1979 that gives exactly the same dob for a Lydric Jenkins. There is also a death in Merthyr in 1986 for a Winifred Lilian Jenkins with a dob of 28 January 1900.

hope this helps

This is odd, there is also a marriage between Winifred L Jones and Lydric Jenkins in Sep/Oct/Nov 1924 (Marylebone 1a 1506) - on FreeBMD.

Hello Mar
Thank you so much, that's great.  With regards to the entry sails to 'Melbourne 30 April' did it give the name of the ship? With the ship I could try the newspapers on (trove) for arrival and other details.

Thanks

Hi Roy
the ship was the Orvieto (Orient shipping line).

Looking at the summary for the 1939 UK record, there is a Winifred L Jenkins born 1900 and Sydric Jenkins born 1899( possibly Lydric) resident in Gelligaer U. D.
So it looks like they did come back from Australia ?
