Charlotte Mackerell and Family
« on: Tuesday 26 January 16 09:02 GMT (UK) »
Hi

On 3 June 1858 Charlotte Seawright married James Mackerell at Ballyscullion, Co Derry. They had at least 3 children together born at Mullaghboy. They were married by license

John Mackerell 1864
Martha Mackerell 1866
Rachel Mackerell 1868

Charlottes birth date was around 1840 and James around 1837

James father was John Mackerell
Charlottes father was William Seawright

Ive been unable to find out what happened to any of the family but suspect they may have moved away. Their childrens surnames were registered as Mackerl, Mackerel and Mackerell. The mothers maiden name Seright, Searight and Lewright. James and Charlotte were both illiterate.

Any suggestions for finding them would be appreciated.

Haven't found any further trace of them either except for this possibility-

Death: James Mackerell c1841-30 Apr.1869 Magherafelt district (Bellaghy subdistrict)

Have you checked the Valuation Revision Books (www.proni.gov.uk) to see if any changes in property are noted as that would give a clue as to when they might have moved away?

Thats the closest I can find to his birth date is the record you mentioned. There are other records of James Mackerell dying in 1869 (2), 1871 (2) and 1898.

There are at least 3 James alive at the same time and around the same place. I found one in the Griffiths valuation for Mullaghboy in 1859 when he would have been 22 or younger if the death certificate is right. Theres a possibility its him or an uncle or cousin.

I havent used the valuation revision books before. If the Griffiths dont show any further entries does that rule the the usefulness of the revision books?

I bought the certificate. Apart from saying that James was married and a farmer the informant is the coroner as James was found dead after 24 hours. The certificate says Ballymacombs, Ballyscullion not Mullaghboy nor mention any other person than the registrar and coroner. James could have worked elsewhere.

The other James in the same area outlived this James as I can see this one was still having children with Catherine Wright.

I wouldn't worry too much about the age on death certificate.

There is a change in the Revisions under Mullaghboy townland- in 1872 a change to Rep[resentative]s of James Mackerell was noted:
17a James Mackerell (ho, off, land)
http://apps.proni.gov.uk/Val12B/RelatedVolume.aspx?7039
I had hoped that it would have gone into Charlotte's name but perhaps she wasn't able to stay in the property for long after James died? (if this is the correct James)

The death certificate is interesting and will see if I can find any report of an incident.

Not having any luck with newspaper reports but surname variations make it more difficult.

Decided to see if I could find anything through Charlotte's family as I know there were Searights in Ballymacombs and eureka!

Here's someone for you to contact-
"Charlotte Seawright who was born in 1840. She married James Mackerell 1837-1869"

Well, so much for that lead  :-\

Charlotte, and children, are still quite elusive. Can't find a death or marriage in Ireland for her (after 1868) so wonder if she went to Australia, etc.
