Dudley workhouse infirmary
« on: Tuesday 26 January 16 17:07 GMT (UK) »
My gt grandmother Sarah Ann Latham lived at New Road Tipton and was buried on the 24th August 1918 in Alexandra Road Cemetery Tipton. On the freereg search it states that she died in the Dudley workhouse infirmary. Does anyone know if  it was still a workhouse in 1918 or was it just an infirmary.  I find it rather sad to find she died in a workhouse.

Can't seen to find, even in Peter Higginbothams splendid site (referred to by lizdb), exactly when the workhouse closed, nearest reference I can get is "early 20th century".

However, that said, don't be too down about GGrandmother. Workhouse infirmaries were where those who could not pay for health care went to be treated and certainly by 1918 they were not the Dickensian places often imagined.  The workhouse buildings became the Burton Road hospital.  See

I am Zoe Northeast, granddaughter of Maximilian Double.

It is with great difficulty I share with you that in the early hours of 07 August 2021, Maximilian passed away unexpectedly but peacefully.

With deep sadness,
Zoe

thank you for the information regarding the workhouse, I feel a lot better now knowing it wasn't what I thought.
