David Bennett Dawson (1857-1909)
« on: Tuesday 26 January 16 23:05 GMT (UK) »
David Bennett Dawson (1857?-1909?) was married to Alvira Mansfield and they had at least four children together: Burtle, Charles, Talmage E Dawson (1894-1974), and Cora. David appears in the 1900 US Census as David B Dawson and a res. of Kansas. His estimated marriage year was 1880. His parents were Daniel Harrison Dawson and Phoebe Jane Bennett.
David Bennett Dawson  appears in the International Genealogical Index. The Census lists his birthplace as Ohio, while IGI listings have him born in Indiana.
David B Dawon appears as White in the 1900 US Census, but shows up in a Richmond National Cemetery under a headstone fit for colored troops. The inscription includes, “David Dawson, U.S.C.T.”. Wouldn’t he have been too young to have served in the Civil War? He may have been born in June 1857.
David Bennett Dawson is mentioned in the Kaess/Ochiltree/Swartz Family History (Revised 2015).
Anyone who can sort through this evidence and help me gain a clearer picture of David, feel free to add your opinion.

The Dawson buried in Richmond National Cemetery is not the David Dawson born in Ohio.

Possibly David B. Dawson in 1880:

>>>>>>>>>>

I don't see any record of David Dawson's death but Alvira [Elvira] was remarried to Douglas Greenwood before 1910.

>>>>>>>>>>>

Marriage of Cora Dawson to Le Grande L. Hardy, 1931 in Utah:

https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:F8G2-XM2

She claimed to have been born in 1898 [presumably a lie].  The 1900 census has her born in February 1882 [but that must have been an error; should be 1892].

I think this is Cora in the 1930 census:

Grave of Le Grande L. Hardy.  Apparently he didn't stay married to Cora.

David Bennett Dawson is mentioned as the Father of Charles Dawson, Violinist, in a Kansas newspaper article around 1915. Talmage Dawson is also mentioned as reuniting with his Brother Charles. In this article, the Father (David B Dawson) is mentioned as an Engineer. More on the Dawson's in the Kaess/Dawson Family (2016).

Looking through familysearch.org, there seems to be a number of David B Dawsons born during the 1850s.  It looks like you may have cross referenced some of these.  How do you know that Daniel Harrison Dawson and Phoebe Jane Bennett are his parents?  The 1860 census of this couple doesn't show any children.

Searching http://chroniclingamerica.loc.gov/
Topeka State Journal, 8 Oct 1897 that states:
David B Dawson of the car department of the Sante Fe was called to Zaleski, Ohio yesterday by the serious illness of his mother.

This notice provided information that David B, if he is yours, was probably working for the railroad and that his mother lived in Zaleski, Vinton, Ohio.

I think this John below may be a brother to your David: supporting data in next reply entry

SURNAMES: DAWSON, REEVES
I am looking for the parents of John C. DAWSON and Mary M. REEVES who was the parents of Mary Mendana DAWSON, my mother's mother. She didn't know any more than that. I have found them in the censuses. John & Mary married in Vinton Co. in 1866, lived in Madison Tp. Just north of Atkinson Ridge Cemetery is 40 acres in the name of Mary DAWSON, I believe this is where they lived till she died and John moved to Gallipolis. John was a Civil War veteran, blinded in one eye and on pension in the 1890 U.S. Census, Zaleski, Vinton Co.

Mendana is definitely an unusual name and it appears as a sister to John in the 1860 census below

Several days ago David Dawson, who lives in Oakland reported to police that his boy, Clarence, had run away from home because he did not want to go to school.  Last night as officers......were going through the Rock Island yards, they found the boy and took him to the station.  The boy has remarkable musical talent and is ambitious to join a minstrel troupe or some such organization, but he will not go to school.

Clarence is probably Charles

A news article about Charles Dawson reuniting with his family states that David died prior to 1910, since Alvira remarries after his death.  It also states that she and the children relocated to Concordia, KS after David's death.  She may have married Greenwood in Concordia, Cloud, KS.

Mary J marries Thomas Green and is in Van Wert Co., Ohio in 1900 census living  as a widow with her mother, Margaret Coulter, a widow, age 74 and her sister, Mandana  Firch.  Margaret dies in Van Wert, OH 18 May 1909 and her father is listed as George Hutchinson and her pob is Galipolis, OH on the death certificate.  Margaret Dawson married John Coulter 31 Aug 1879 in Vinton Co., OH.

Mandana marries first, Martin Hare in Athens Co., OH in 1865;  second, Julius Firch in Cuyahoga Co., OH in 1883,  and third, William Smith in 1906 in Van Wert, OH.

Charles Dawson, Violinist
« Reply #7 on: Thursday 08 September 16 14:58 BST (UK) »
In the Topeka State Journal newspaper article dated Mar 20 1915, Charles Dawson is mentioned as having run away from home (Kansas) to become a Violinist/Musician. He studied for three years in Salt Lake City, Utah, and studied a variety of instruments including Violin and Piano. He traveled to Japan, Alaska, Utah and the USA, as part of his musical travels. In 1915, he was on his 8th annual tour of the USA as a Violinist. He reunited with his brother Talmage E Dawson when the latter saw an advertisement for 'Charles Dawson, Violinist' in Kansas. It appears Charles reunited with his Mother and the rest of his family in 1915.

David Bennett Dawson (1857-1909)
« Reply #8 on: Thursday 08 March 18 21:57 GMT (UK) »
There appears to be a 5th child of David Bennett Dawson (1857?-1909?) and Alvira Mansfield. She is Margaret Mae Dawson, b. Aug 10 1885 in El Dorado, Butler, Kansas, d. Feb 3 1965 in  Sacremento, Calirfornia.  She is not to be confused with Margaret Jane Swartz or Margaret Jean  Ochiltree. She was also known as Maggie. Margaret Mae Dawson shows up in the Kansas State Census with some of her other family members.
Can anyone help me locate/pull up any Kansas Census between 1885 and 1915 with Margaret 'Maggie' Dawson in it? She may appear with her mother Elvira.
