Co Longford search / Thos Simpson Mrd Cath Keenan
« on: Thursday 28 January 16 00:32 GMT (UK) »
Hi, I'm new to this searching for Ireland relatives and could use some help.

Using the familysearch.org website I've come up with this temporary road block.

Thomas Simpson b:1819 Ire d:Sep1878 Brooklyn NY

He married Catharine Keenan b:1823 Ire d: Dec1879 Brooklyn NY (could be CathErine)
Son William was born in Ire also 1856ish d: Jan1910 Brooklyn

The information I was given, I am guessing was transcribed incorrectly, but it listed Thomas being born in Parish Ardah (most likely Ardagh) Town Bernagh (I'm sure that is incorrect also) Co Longford.

So Thos and Cath were both born in Co Longford I am guessing but have yet to prove that, or find where the Simpson's were really from.

I used ancestry.com DNA and show such a high percentage for G.Britain that I'm starting to wonder if someone migrated to Ireland somewhere along the way (my Muhl family.. that a Simpson married into is of German decent).

please, any help would be appreciated.

Can't find William, but these look like the baptisms for two of his siblings in the registers for the RC parish of Ardagh and Moydow...

27 April 1840, Bridget, daughter of Thomas Simpson and Cath Keenan, sponsors Eugene Keenan & Judith Simpson (left page, 13th entry up from bottom):

23 September 1844, James, son of Thomas Symson and Cath Keenan, sponsors Thomas Boice & Ellen Duffy (right page, 16th entry up from bottom):

Thank you for that, I will have to look into it because I have seen another family Simpson with a Bridget in it, but not mine.  Unless these two children died prior to the immigration, it would not make sense that they would have a child Thomas in 1842 b: Ireland, then immigrate and have a child James in 1848 in New York and no listing for these two you have found.  So, now I wonder if they had children when they first married - that died prior to immigration!

Thank you so much for the information!

PS: their children per New York census were: Thomas, James, Owen, Catharine, and William (My line).  I think I will go back to your links and do some more research on possibly finding Thos and Caths marriage, I would really like to go back another generation if possible.

[then immigrate and have a child James in 1848 in New York]

[Son William was born in Ire also 1856ish d: Jan1910 Brooklyn]

To ensure that we are looking for the correct information can you confirm the dates posed are correct?
based on James shown as born in New York in 1848 and William in Ireland in 1856
thank you  ;)

there is a family tree on a paid site with this family showing William born in New York in 1855
Kearney & Bourke/ Johns & Fox/ Mannion & Finan/ Donohoe & Curley
Byrne [Carthy], Keeffe/ Germaine, Butler/ McDermott, Giblin/ Lally, Dolan

"Myluck", as long as it's not a US paid site, we may be in business  ha ha (I have my tree posted on ancestry.com and have a paid membership right now).  Here is what I have (dates of birth may be off by a year or so due to census errors).  I have also seen hand writing mis-read, but this is what I have been going off of, some US census info show Cath being 3 years younger than Thos and other shows her 5 or 6 years younger.

F: Thomas Simpson b: 1819 Ire d:1878 NY
M: Catha(e)rine Keenan b: 1823 Ire d:1879 NY

Children
Thomas b:1842 Ire
James b:1848 NY OR 1846 d:1928
Owen b:1850/49 NY d: 1908
Catharine b: 1852 NY
William b:1855/1856 NY Mrd Mary Kirk Oct1878
Margaret b: 1860 NY

As of right now I am working census info, though I did connect with a relative of the Son James' line! But she too is stuck at the Ireland border.

At one point I thought James was born in Ireland but the year gap would confirm being
born in NY.

Appreciate your help!

Based on the baptisms that gaffy posted which included a James in the correct parish (Ardagh & Moydow, Co. Longford) I think that this could be good starting place.

It could be that James was slightly older than you think also that they named two children James (the elder having died).  This was not unusual.

Have you located their emigration records? again this could state how many children travelled with them.

Have someone working the immigration issue for me, hope to hear something back tomorrow.  She's got access to ancestry.com World and has been doing this a LOT longer than I have.
