Wicklow, Bray/Mary Irvine b. 1804
« on: Thursday 28 January 16 15:46 GMT (UK) »
I can see there have been quite a number of posts about Mary Irvines -- but none of them seem to be my one! She was born in Bray in 1804 and married Charles Wimberley, then a student, later a clergyman, in St Giles, Camden, London in 1825, later accompanying him first to India and then to various posts in England.

My first query is: can anyone find a baptism for her? The two big standard sources are giving me nothing.
Second query, if so, I'd love to know who her parents came from ... later family belief is that they or her father at least were/was Scottish.

There is a disk in the library in Bray with transcripts of all the baptisms recorded in the Bray area from that period.  Next time I'm in there I can check for you if you are not near it.

Not sure if you have tried rootsireland yet, but there is a Mary Irvine Bray church of Ireland, born 30th June 1796, father Charles, mother Dianna, father's occupation , Inverness Fencibles.

Women tended to be a bit creative about their age, so don't know if that would explain difference in date of birth, or perhaps first Mary b. 1796 died and another child called Mary, but if so does not appear in search.

No other siblings coming up on search.

Hi there, thank you! I am sure this is the right Mary because I have discovered her father was from Inverness and in the army. 'Inverness Fencibles'! Sounds like something out of a novel. Many thanks again.

Popped into Bray library today and the only information regarding Mary was the same info as given by Bandc above.  Her surname was transcribed as Irvin for what it's worth.

Thank you. I am sure it was Irvine with an 'e'. Her uncle and grandfather were heads of the family and lived at Drum Castle in Scotland -- the family always spell it with an 'e'!
