Picken/Gathin family of Shifnal
« on: Thursday 28 January 16 20:12 GMT (UK) »
Hi All

My current interest is Humphrey Picken married to Mary Gathin 1757 at St Andrews, Shifnal or any of their children
Is anyone else researching this family between 1700 - 1800?

thanks
Judith

Have you looked to see if anyone else has Picken in their surname interests - easiest place to start?

Hi Chempat, Garstonite + Ciderdrinker

Thank you all for your replies and suggestions.

Re Sarah - it is possible that she is one of mine but seems strange that all her siblings were born in Shifnal.
Re Humphrey death in 1802 - could be mine but without further detail I can't lay claim to him although will keep this on file in the hope I can prove a connection whether in direct line or branch

Regards Judith   :)

Good Afternoon
I was a bit rushed Saturday with the Library about to close,so I've been back and taken another look at the records for Shifnal.
I've found the wife's Mary burial  18.8.1783 age 57 Mary wife of Humphrey.
and that might indicate that the marriage Humphrey Picken to Hannah Leake 14.3.1785 might be him.

Also there's this baptism
Humphrey Picking s of Humphrey and Anne his wife labourer Shifnal  10.10.1729.

Now all the couples other children are down as Picken so I think it's fair to assume that's your Humphrey.
Other children Mary 23/28.3.1728,William 16.1.1731,John 17/19.1 1734 labourer,Thomas 12.9.1736,John 25/28.9.1740 of Copy green,Anne 27.2/28.9.1743 of Lizard.

Marriage Humphrey Picken and Ann Foxall 26.9.1726 at Shifnal.
There's a burial for Humphrey senior 2.10.1748 of Commonside.
Possible Anne Picken age 75 2.11.1772.(the others all have husbands names attached)

The only other Humphrey Picken in the parish records I can see for Shifnal is this
Sarah 12/23.5.1700 d of Humphrey and Elizabeth of Shifnal.

Shropshire archives have a apprenticeship for a Humphrey Picken to Frances Pinches of Stanton Shifnal 30.7.1717 but there is no more detail online.

The Gathins
Benjamin married Mary Bedford 29.5.1716
Benjamin buried 10.7.1759
Mary wife of William Gathin 7.8.1750 (but the only Mary burial)
John son b aptised 28.9/2.10.1717 labourer
Robert s of John  and Mary  baptised 20.1./3.2.1750.

Hope that helps.I's like to have found more but that's all I can see at the moment.

ps the Sarah baprism 6.1.1764 at Rodington says of Roden.

Wow ciderdrinker that is fantastic  :) :)

I do think that Humphrey + Elizabeth - parents of Sarah - could also be parents of Humphrey born c1700 but just have to prove it!! (his eldest son was also Humphrey).

The details you provided have given me a lot of food for thought - would you mind if I asked further questions when I've looked at properly?

Best wishes  Judith

Picken/Gathin/Foxall/Squier family of Shifnal - revised
« Reply #8 on: Sunday 28 February 16 15:22 GMT (UK) »
Hi All

Having now had time to digest info given by ciderdrinker below I am extending my query to include Foxall + Squier(?).
Humphrey Picken c1702 married Anne Foxall 26/9/1726 @ St Andrews Shifnal. Anne was born 22/11/1700, baptised 23/11/1700, parents Henry Foxall + Mary - from a document supplied by familysearch (shame this service has been withdrawn).
There is a burial for Henry Foxall 7 January 1721 - could be my Henry - this from findmypast transcript. Also on FindMyPast transcript is a marriage of Henry Fosall to Mary Squier 16/5/1688 whom I believe could be mine as Henery Foxall's first child Anthoney was baptised March 1689 (no Mum shown)
If there are records for Shifnal from 1650 I would appreciate any info re Picken/Foxall or Squier whatever the spelling.
Thank you
Judith
