The Hannafords of Chase Side, Enfield, Middlesex
« on: Friday 29 January 16 19:37 GMT (UK) »
I am interested in information about Chase Side in the 1850s. Was it a workhouse? Is there an 1851 census that would list the people who lived there at that time? According to their death certificates, three of my young Hannaford ancestors died at Chase Side - Sarah aged 22 in 1856, Robert, aged 17 in 1857 and Charles, aged 14 in 1857. I would like to know more about thewe tragic deaths.

Hi and welcome to Rootschat, there was a Workhouse in Chase Side, which I believe ended up as a hospital/ school, St Michael's? The site is still there next to the "Wonder" public house, but not all Chase Side comprised the Workhouse, it is still still a major route from Enfield Town to Lancaster Road/Lavender Hill.

One of the residents of the Workhouse in 1851 was a William Good aged 10 on HO107/1703/375/9

Welcome from me too :)

I can see records of the three of them buried at St Andrew, Enfield:

09 April 1856 Sarah Susanna Hannaford, aged 22
14 Feb 1857 Robert Eyles Hannaford, aged 17
21 Sep 1857 Charles Cranston Hannaford, aged 14

What were their causes of death, please? This may be a clue to why they were in the Enfield area (e.g. if they were suffering from tuberculosis they may have been sent there for treatment in a countryside setting).

The family does not seem to have been impoverished or based in the area.   Administration of Sarah's estate of under £100 was granted to her father Peter Allan Hannaford, gentleman, of 30 Hunter St, Berwick Square, Middlesex on 16 February 1858.

Thanks so much for your quick reply. Sarah died of scarlet fever. Robert of epilepsy. Charles of "disease of the heart"
