If you get to desperation point with your Cootes try Radwinter which is situated between Saffron Walden and Hempstead, the Radwinter transcripts are online if you haven't already found them.

Radwinter online Parish Register transcripts, Browne's transcripts plus more.

The early part of the transcripts (1631 to 1812) are found under the heading Browne's Transcripts at the bottom of the first page which appears.

1813 plus are on the first page which appears.

The site the transcripts are located in is the Radwinter Village History.

There are quite a number of Coots baptised there, one, a William could be mine, time will tell.

I've managed to find a William Coote on Hempstead census 1901. It would appear that he is recorded as an 8 yr old boarder with a William Willis I think from the transcript and his family.
 I know he married a Maud Elizabeth Cox and have previously been able to trace the Cox side however the Coote side is a dead end.

Who was his Father from the marriage certificate (or parents from his birth certificate)?

Unfortunately I have not seen the birth certificate.
I know that he was born in 1893 and was named William Leslie Coote, possibly in Saffron Walden
He boarded with William and Harriet Willis at Burded Barn.
