South Australian Criminal Records
« on: Saturday 30 January 16 01:40 GMT (UK) »
Can anyone advice me how to get access to criminal records in SA.. My great great grandmother died in prison in 1941 in South Australia and I have tried various agencies in SA to gain access to her prison records... to no help from any agency other than ...." we don't keep prison records" Who does? and how to access them?

http://www.archives.sa.gov.au/content/gaols

The State Records collection contains records documenting the gaoling of offenders, both within the police gaols and the wider gaol system.  Records exist for the following:

Adelaide Gaol, Yatala Labour Prison, Gladstone Gaol, Mount Gambier Gaol, Port Augusta Gaol, Port Lincoln Gaol, Redruth Gaol and Wallaroo Gaol.
....

Perhaps the records are on restricted access, particularly if there's identifying information for people who may still be living.

Cheers,  JM

Police Gazettes go to 1947 , ask a library for access to those.

SEFHG has CDs so they must be available somewhere :)

I believe the Genealogy Society of SA has some gaol records on microfiche.
I am Australian, from all the lands I come (my ancestors, at least!)

Would a Death in Custody inquest have been held? Is there info on Trove about the death?

Thank you for reply. I had tried SA Archives in the past, but they told me they don't hold them... I have also been told that I should provide a documentary trail that leads gg grandmother to myself. No member of her direct family is living but documents that I have can be confusing as she had many aliases........
Born:  Caroline Emma Mutton 1861 Bathurst NSW ( document I have)
Married:  Horace Wilshire then deserted him and child ( NSW Police Gazette)
Went to South Australia:
Gave birth to 4 children ( my grandfather b1884) but never married father of these children William Carver.
In 1905 she married Adolphe Marval. He died in 1935. ( have document but lists never married before, which is incorrect)
On my grandfathers death certificate it lists Caroline Emma Mutton McPhillamy as his mother.??
On Caroline death certificate ( known as Madam Marval) it lists 1 living child and 2 deceased where as she had 3 children still living ............I have documents but no documents that list McPhillamy on them at all...  Now how do or where do I go to link all of this above
Yes, her crimes and death are on Trove under Madam Caroline Emma Marval

Possibly a first port of call would be to search Trove, as David has suggested; type in your great grandmother's name using each of the surnames you have for her, to see what results you find. If you've never used Trove before, use the inverted commas around your search query, eg "Caroline Emma Mutton".
Edit: sorry, didn't see that last bit (or added later?)

Just letting you all know that I can't physically go into SA and check Microfiche as I live in NSW. Sorry I never mentioned that before
