Don, your entry from Rutherglen could very well be him from the few details we have so far. 1901, this must be him you would think:

James Buchanan 37 grocer b. Prestonpans (is this father? age mistranscribed likely)
Isabella Buchanan 55 wife b. Edinburgh
James Buchanan 27 son grocer b. Prestonpans
Daniel Buchanan 25 Appr Bricklayer b. Prestonpans
David Buchanan 21 builder b. Prestonpans
Agnes Buchanan 19 Mother's Help b. Prestonpans
Isabella Buchanan 10 b. Rutherglen, Lanarkshire

Address: 31 Castle St, Rutherglen

WE, as you mentioned above, think it would be good at this stage to perhaps also have the photo dated www.rootschat.com/forum/free-photo-restoration/. With father also being James Buchanan and also a grocer, this might help a little more at this point.

Don, by the sounds of it the ref you checked was the valuations rolls for a James Buchanan, at 16 Main Street, Rutherglen.

Hi Davie

That is great  :) Fits perfect with what Don mentioned.

Been trying to find old photos of Main Street Rutherglen. Not having much success really. One on Virtual Mitchell which doesn't add anything here www.mitchelllibrary.org/virtualmitchell/image.php?i=15669&r=2&t=4&x=1

checked PO books from 1904/05 to 1911/12 and he appears at this address from those dates, so looks like he gets to Rutherglen in 1904.

Strangely enough there is another entry below for a Buchanan, Jas, dairy, 225 King St, Rutherglen, on the same dates so maybe he had two shops?

ps, he's not in the 1927 book for R'glen

Thanks Monica and all the other Rootchatters working on this thread.
My American cousin also says thanks too.
And the census list that Monica listed on the second page for residing in Rutherglen and being born in Prestonpans has all the children listed that match up with the Buchanan line we are working on.  :)

just had a look at my copy of the Stenlake, Old Rutherglen book. Couple of pics of Main St but nothing that would help here.
