Gamekeeper at Home
« on: Sunday 31 January 16 12:38 GMT (UK) »
I came across this site while looking for somethingelse.

www.flickr.com/photos/swindonlocal/3784001743/in/album-72157621965075674/

I feel it is worthy of some detective work and will be interested to see who takes up the challenge.
To start, the 1871 census reveals 2 game keepers in Hodson Bottom.
Edward Haylock, 50 with a wife and 5 sons aged 12 - 6 &
George Stone 31 with a wife but no children.
I can find Edward living in Wroughton in 1891, game keeper still, but no George.
I can find neither in 1881.
amaryllis2007 makes some useful comments but does not consider the children may be George's.
Over to you, Toby.

Not taking on anything more challenging than a simple 1881 look up.

Hi MaureeninNY,

What exactly are you after?

I couldn't open the link you posted. Not your fault but possibly with Anc....

Can you give more detail please?

The link is to familysearch not ancestry -  ???  link works for me...

1881 RG11 Piece/Folio/page   2016/101/3
Edward Haybell 66 b Hildersham, Cambridgeshire gamekeeper
Emma H wife 53 b Aud, Shropshire
Edward son 22 b Glenmorris, Scotland
Samuel son 20 b Marylebone, London
Edwin son 17 b Netley, Hampshire

I think Tony's original query is to identify the gamekeeper in the picture in the link in the first post. It looks like an older couple with a son & wife & 3 children - looking like an older boy, middle sister & youngest child of indeterminate sex [as boys wore dresses when young], dated by Swindon Library at 1880s although the book based on the gameekeeper was published 1878.

Hi Josey. I could not find him in 1881. You have the right man. Where was he living?

It was Maureen in NY who found him; living at Highworth, Chisledon, Wiltshire.

I posted the photo on th edating board

and Jim [thanks] has dated it from the younger woman's sleeves to the mid late 1890s.
