John HANCOCK - D.C.M.
« on: Sunday 31 January 16 15:42 GMT (UK) »
Hi

I am searching for the military records for the above, he was born 2 March 1890 in Camrose.  He died 21 March 1978.  His grave is in Camrose Baptist Church, it says on his gravestone that he was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal.  I have been unable to find his military records, any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Susie

Over 60% of WW1 service records were burnt in the WW2 blitz.  Those that survived are on Ancestry or FindMyPast etc

If you have already checked those sites then his record was probably one of those destroyed

Do you have any other details for his service?  Corps or Service Number?

This would appear to be the man you are researching even though this one has a 's' on the end of his surname  :)

Citation fro DCM -

320016 A/CSM J Hancocks 24th Bn (Camrose, Pembroke)
For conspicuous devotion to duty, ability and leadership as platoon commander. He has on various occasions lead his platoon, setting an excellent example to all ranks. (11.3.20)

The date (11.3.20) refers to the date on the Supplement to the London Gazette.

24th (Pembroke and Glamorgan Yeomanry)  Welsh Regiment.  Action in Palestine 1917-18.  War Diary, unfortunately not digitised, at http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/C7359765.  Would very likely have more detail.
