William and Harriet Willis from Hempstead
« on: Monday 01 February 16 06:15 GMT (UK) »
Trying to trace family of  William and Harriet Willis. William was a farmer at Burded Barn in 1901. My great grandad bordered with them at the age of 8, a William Leslie Coote.
Trying to find out how he came to board with them.

You will have to order his Birth Certificate. :)

The records available are Civil and only mention the birth and as you know the census records are as you stated them on this thread http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=740364.0

So if it was my family I would order a BC straight away :)

Just posting that 1901 census for reference:
Ecclesiastical parish       Great Sampford       Town   Hempstead     County   Essex
Registration district     Saffron Walden  Sub-registration district     Radwinter
William Willis   45
Harriet Willis   44
Charles Willis   20
Harry Willis   17
****William Coote   8
Class   RG13     Piece   1736    Folio 23    Page 1
In an adjacent household is Charles Coote, 60,shepherd, widower with Minnie 16 and George 11
Also on that same census page, probably living as very close neighbours are George (a shepherd) and Harriet Coote, 57 and 54.

So you need the birth certificate, and the Willis's might be related, or just neighbours taking William in.

In the 1891 census, Charles Coote (father of Minnie and George in 1901) is already widowed, and with more children (Elizabeth 21 in 1891, Alice 13 and Harry 10)
William could be an illegitimate son of Elizabeth, but again, birth certificate needed.

William and Harriet Willis look to be on preceding census page to the Coote's in 1891

Both families seem to be under 'Witch Tree' for the address.

Hi

As David has mentioned, there are 2x threads  running asking questions about the same person.
You should add the (cross-)links to both threads.
This will help avoid duplication of effort/time by Rootschatters willing to help

As already pointed out, there is a potential birth reg for William.
You'd be much better served if you obtained that birth certificate and publish the details

It looks like the Mary Ann Coote mentioned died before this William was born

in 1901, William Willis is recorded as being an Agricultural Labourer not Farmer.

You may also find that "Barded Barn" may turn out to be "Bo(a)rded Barn".
