FINLAND - Pulonita and Kangos
« on: Monday 01 February 16 19:05 GMT (UK) »
I'm looking for help from anyone with experience in finding records for FINLAND circa 1880.

Frank KANGOS bc1880 in Finland married Hilma PULONITA (possibly Paloviita?) in USA circa 1910.   Hilma was bc1885 in Finland.  On her 1946 New York death cert, her parents are named as John Pulonita and Maria Kushi.  Frank and Hilma's son, William,  was b1910 New York.

I've tried to find them arriving in USA, but nothing found (immigration, marriage, death of Frank) other than the 1930 census where Hilma is a widow and Frank's draft notice of 1916.   I have the census info of Hilma and son William in USA, but its the Finnish trail I'm more interested in.

Frank Kangos arrived USA around 1901, so about 21yo. Hilma P arrived 1906, also 21yo.

Any help, ideas or suggestions would be much appreciated.
Genealogists don't die, they just lose their census.

This is a link to the Finland page of cyndi's list, which lists genealogical sites

http://www.cyndislist.com/finland/

you may find some links there that help
James Stott c1775-1850. James was born in Yorkshire but where? He was a stonemason and married Elizabeth Archer (nee Nicholson) in 1794 at Ripon. They lived thereafter in Masham. If anyone has any suggestions or leads as to his birthplace I would be interested to know. I have searched for it for years without success. Thank you.

Hi

Here is Hilma's passenger list - SS Cedric on 7 Oct 1905:
https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:JF45-PT5

The image is free to see if you register at www.ellisisland.org .

Or if you have Ancestry she is under the name Hilma Palovrita.

She travelled with 2 friends. She came from Honkajoki in the Satakunta region. Kankaanpää is also in Honkajoki.
There is a tree on Ancestry saying that she was born in Kankaanpää.

If you write palov in "last name" here    http://hiski.genealogia.fi/hiski/6rwukh?en+0097+kaikki    you will get a number of spellings for Paloviita. These could be Hilma's relatives. The records only go as far as 1860 unfortunately.

There is also a Boston, Massachusettes passenger list for a Hilma Paloviita also from Honkajoki on the SS Cymric on 22 Apr 1906:
http://www.rootschat.com/links/01gzf/

She is going to visit a friend Sandra Harju. She is 22 years old.

This looks to be the same person but both say they haven't visited USA before and the ages seem to differ.

Frank, Hilma, & William are on the 1915 New York state census here - https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:K9L4-CDN

Just to make sure you didn't misread it, Frank's WWI draft registration card was from 1918.

Hi

I don't know how many censuses you have but I have them all here. You will notice that in the 1930 census Hilma's sister May Wita is living with them. She is single.

Here is their 1910 Census: Frank Hangas:
They look to have married in Finland or an error for 1 year instead of 10 years.

There is a tree on Ancestry saying that she was born in Kankaanpää.

Hmm.... with hindsight this may not be correct now. The tree I was looking at has mixed up 2 families with the same surname.

The May Wita from the 1930 census is her sister as it says. Her name is Wilhelmina Paloviita. I have found these records stating Hilma Kangas as her sister and the name of their mother which is hard to read...... maybe Eliina or something.
So the passenger list for Hilma is most probably this one as the age fits and her home town (from reply 4): http://www.rootschat.com/links/01gzf/
Hilma's list says she was single.

Wilhelmina Paloviita:
1910 - https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:JJNP-H3T - page 2, page 1 is on Ancestry
1910 - https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:JJNP-D4D - Record of Detained Aliens

1926 - http://www.rootschat.com/links/01h0u/  - page 1
1926 - http://www.rootschat.com/links/01h0v/  - page 2
