Here is  a photo of HMS Daphne 1868, anyone know the gentleman on the extreme left standing , is he wearing  a  Navy uniform and what rank, if not what is he/it

I would assume that he is one of the Royal Marine Light Infantry detachment on the ship, probably the officer commanding the detachment.

This photo aroused controversy when it formed part of an exhibition, much discussed online.

It's a very good photo for 1868.

Interesting link to HMS Daphne.

Rule of thumb was one marine per gun. So not a very large RMLI detachment.

Thank you all for your assistance, is it possible to to tell what rank he is?  I believe the ship's captain took the photo-Capt Sullivan, which is great quality I think.

With a very small Marine detachment there could be Corporal in charge. So as no stripes are showing on the man standing left, he is probably a Private.

Presumably the ship's muster would have the names and ranks of the RMLI detachment? Viewable at TNA
