Green Family
« on: Tuesday 02 February 16 12:13 GMT (UK) »
Hi, I'm looking for some advice.

My great grandfather Daniel Green (Irish Roman Catholic) married Lily Guest nee Goddard (not catholic) in Nottingham in 1920. On his wedding cert it says his father is James Green deceased. Daniels job description is ex Army.

To trace Daniel's family backwards I went into the 1901 Irish census and there is a James Green wife Mary and his daughter Eliza aged 27 and grandson Daniel aged 14. Living in Durrow Queens Co.

Fast forward to 1911 and Eliza is now married to Willie Jackson living in Nottingham with their daughter and Daniel who is now her brother, the place of birth for both is Durrow Queens Co.  The birth dates are all a bit out by a year or two but I am convinced they are the right people because my Daniel had lost his right arm at some point and the census advises us that he indeed is missing his right arm. I cant imagine there would be more than one Daniel Green in 1911 in Nottingham with one arm from Ireland. Family tale also states that Daniel came to the UK with his mother, but no reason why.
So my thoughts are..... Daniel is indeed Eliza's son, but when she moved to the UK she listed him as her brother, I'm guessing so she could marry well.

Therefore how do I find out which Army Daniel was in, am presuming Irish.
I can find no record of him and Eliza coming to the UK.
I cant find any record of any further children for James and Mary.

Any help would be great.

Thanks
Beth

There was no Irish Army pre 1922, he would have been in the British Army, probably and Irish Regiment.
Many Army records were lost in the blitz during WWII but you might be one of the lucky ones.
