Adelaide Inquest
« on: Wednesday 03 February 16 00:04 GMT (UK) »
I am looking for a name in an inquest held in Adelaide in January 1839.

I have seen an account in Trove, but suspect that the reporter may have got one name wrong. A very common mistake with the name in question.

Now I guess to check I need to see the actual records.

Anyone know if they exist.

If so where?

Anyone have access to them, as I'm in NSW and have problems with travel.

Thanks for any help anyone can give.

If any records do exist, they will not be open for public access, being less than 100 years.
I am Australian, from all the lands I come (my ancestors, at least!)

Pine/Pyne, Dowdeswell, Kempster, Sando/Sandoe/Sandow, Nancarrow, Hounslow, Youatt, Richardson, Jarmyn, Oxlade, Coad, Kelsey, Crampton, Lindner, Pittaway, and too many others to name.
Devon, Dorset, Gloucs, Cornwall, Warwickshire, Bucks, Oxfordshire, Wilts, Germany, Sweden, and of course London, to name a few.

State Records is the place you need to contact.
Try searching their site first. http://www.archives.sa.gov.au/

If you give us the name then perhaps we can find something - maybe another report in trove or ...?

The Inquest I am looking for was held 21 Jan 1839.

The deceased was believed to be John Buchanan off the ship the Bardaster.

The South Australian Gazette reports his cabin mate on the ship, and a witness at the Inquest to be "Charles Frederick Gordon". My Ancestor (gg grandfather) was Charles Frederick Gorton.

Now Gorton MAY have been on the Bardaster,

http://www.slsa.sa.gov.au/fh/passengerlists/1839Bardcaster.htm

The Parbury's oriental herald and colonial intelligencer

Lists those leaving England on the ship as including a Gorton (again of corse no forenames).

Lists one passenger as Gaston/Gorton, no Christian names. But doesn't list a Gordon, hence my strong suspicion that the Reporter simply misheard the name Gorton as Gordon.

Now to me, it all ads up, but I have a few family members who want even more proof. And I was simply hoping that the actual inquest notes would confirm what I believe.

There are some newspapers at the following link that have not yet migrated across to Trove.  This makes them far less friendly to search, but perhaps with some patience there may be some mention in some of these papers, not just the Adelaide ones, but the inter-colonial news sections in NSW newspapers.  Then again, perhaps you should also consider seeking out the papers that would likely be sent back to his original port....
