We know that we take rumours with a grain of salt, at least you can sleep well tonight without any thoughts of the couple running through your head.  At least you have something to chase up now :D

As assisted immigrants, Robert and Isabella DRYSDALE  arrived at Port Chalmers on the Pladda on 8.9.1861. I am assuming they were a married couple.

Hello.

An assumption so easy to make. We have an example in our tree where a brother and a sister came out from Scotland in 1859. They came to kinsman whom they knew, and were hosted by them until their parents, and the younger siblings, arrived a couple of years later.

From what I knew of their connections to my family, I JUST ASSUMED it was the Father [same Christian name as son] and Daughter, who came out first. I was well into researching that family before I discovered my mistake.

There had been a job awaiting the female's arrival.

Upon arrival they [our extended lot] definitely sought out fellow countrymen, so there will be clues and a key to be found with further research.

All the best.

Hi Minnie...

All births registered in Waikouaiti.

---

Interestingly (or not), the following 1864 Waikouaiti births were consecutive on the fiche...

1864/751 - DRYSDALE, Ellen
1864/752 - DRYSDALE, Robert

Robert was the son of Robert and Isabella.

Ellen was the daughter of David and Mary..

Wonder if David and Robert (the two fathers) were siblings/cousins.

There is plenty online about David DRYSDALE and Mary TURNBULL

Was able to look on ancestry this afternoon and the burial record for David's wife Mary says...

Blackstone Hill Cemetery, Maniatoto County

Mary DRYSDALE d.15 Jan 1903 aged 77y - daughter of William TURNBULL, farmer, mother unknown - Presbyterian - born Sutherlandshire, Scotland - 30 years in NZ - Married in Victoria to David DRYSDALE

And here is a link to some info about David DRYSDALE...

I think Stirling, England should be Stirling, Scotland.

Hello Beg,

Now that is interesting because Waikouaiti was close to where I found a confirmed Drysdale member of my family, namely James, born about 1839 and who emigrated about 1866 as a widower. He farmed at Palmerston (South).

However AbbyKatNZ has confirmed that Robert did not come to New Zealand. There was a family headed by a William Drysdale who lived at Blueskin (Waitati). I believe they originally came from Glenluce in Wigtownshire and so I have ruled them out.

That David I have also ruled out, having some years ago made contact with a descendant. At this stage it appears that perhaps only James emigrated, about 5 years after his married sister, who was my great-great-grandmother.

Thank you for your interest.......

Robert DRYSDALE was born circa 1834 Mochrum, Wigtown, Scotland and married Isabella HENERY on 23 November 1857 at Old Luce, Wigtown, Scotland. The 1861 census has them at The Barbeth Farm, Cottage House, Kirkcolm, Wigtown, Scotland.  They then came to NZ aboard the Platta.  Robert and Isabella appear as the parents on the death record for one of my ancestors, Annie McCALL (nee DRYSDALE).  But in fact, it appears my Annie was actually the illegitimate child of Robert and another woman named Mary ANDERSON (verified by her Scottish birth date and the 1861 census).  Mary died when Annie was 4 (also in 1861).  Annie also came to Otago but it seems not with Robert and Isabella.  Possibly Annie did not arrive in NZ until as late as 1876 (aboard the Pomond) and quickly married Hugh McCALL on arrival -- I've got some more checking to do about this.

Some more info from Isabella's death certificate, Isabella Henry Drysdale died 18 April 1877 in Palmerston. She had been in NZ 16 years (consistent with arriving on the Pladda in 1861).  She had 3 living male children (also consistent with records you listed). Her husband was Robert Drysdale.  He signed Isabella's death certificate so he was certainly still alive in 1877, indeed I believe he died in Kurow on 3 March 1893, but I've yet to obtain his actual death certificate.

Hello,

Thank you for your interest but it appears that this branch of the Drysdale family is not connected to mine.
