Yes, I realise that 1865 Robert cannot be the father. He has been well and truly ruled out. I have changed tack.  Just trying to see what turns up. It could suit me if those children were born in Otago. A marriage in NZ not found for the couple who produced those children, if they arrived in 1861.

AbbyKatNZ has very kindly sent me the 1851 census details......

Robert was aged 12. He had a number of siblings including a sister Isabella, aged 16.

So I think I shall have to ponder on this some more. Thanks everyone for your help.

Looks like it KHP. When you have only family rumour to work with, it can be a bit daunting knowing where to start.  And in this case it may have been just that, rumour.
