Three questions to a marriage certificate
« on: Thursday 04 February 16 11:53 GMT (UK) »
I have this information from a marriage certificate

Marriage at Guildford Register Office 3rd February 1863
Thomas Snook Age 24, Bachelor, House Painter.
and Esther Furlonger Age 21, Spinster

Witnesses: Frederick Snook & William Day

Thomas Snook lived in Woking (now Old Woking) which would not have had a Register office at that time.

Frederick Snook was Thomas Snook's step-father, but who was William Day?
Does ayone know where the Guildford Register Office was in 1863?
And is it still at the same place?

Hi Muffin,

It is at Artington House, Portsmouth Road, Guildford now.  I have no idea where it was in the 1860's, maybe Surrey History Centre will know.

He may have no connection with them at all, perhaps just someone who worked in the office and who was asked to witness the marriage. Often on parish records the same names appear time after time as witnesses.

I can only see one William Day in 1861 Guildford / Woking - he was bn c1841 and was a servant at Prince of Wales Inn, Woodbridge Road, Guildford.  So maybe as groom says a friend
