Where in Ireland did my gt.gt..grandfather come from
« on: Friday 05 February 16 13:44 GMT (UK) »
My Gt.Gt.Grandfather William Durnin born 1807 spent most of his life in Liverpool but on all the census lists I could find, he is just listed as being born in Ireland. Is there an area in Ireland where the name 'Durnin' might come from? I would be most grateful if anyone could help.
Many thanks
Cecile

If you have his father's name & occupation from the censuses [or his marriage certificate] you can look for his baptism on www.rootsireland.ie [a subscription site] & his father on Griffiths Valuation [ca 1840 - 1850] on http://www.failteromhat.com/.

The NLI at http://registers.nli.ie/registers/vtls000635198#page/90/mode/1up
have RC parish registers scanned which you can browse once you have an idea of the parish. If you can find the baptism here it will give his mother's name too.

PS I see he married in 1832, so no registration certificate  :( and the parish records are very unlikely to have his father's name.

FWIW a tree on ancestry has him spelled Durnan & born Dublin.

Unfortunately I don't know anything about his parents. I think he must have gone to Liverpool as an adult. His occupation was a tailor so whether or not he went to look for work and met my gt.gt grandmother and decided to get married, I don't really know.
Thanks for the suggestion anyway.
Best wishes
Cecile

Under the Irish naming patterns - the first son was usually named after the father's father -- so if William's first son was named John --- it is possible his father was named John (although that's not cast in stone).

Unfortunately - it is often very difficult to find baptisms in Ireland prior to 1830 --- the published records become fewer and fewer the further back you go.

Ideally you could do with William having had a second marriage (after the start of Civil Registration)- then at least you would have the name of his father.

Sometimes - where a person settled in England, was amongst friends, neighbours and family from back home in Ireland. If there are Irish people around William on the census records, maybe someone has sneaked a county name in!

Are there any other Durnan's from Ireland, in Liverpool -- on the census records -- have they given a county?

If it makes you feel any better, I can't get further back than about 1836 with my Irish ancestry!
