Hugh Pritchard 1785-1862
« on: Saturday 06 February 16 06:14 GMT (UK) »
I am compiling the family tree and have a Hugh Pritchard, born in Amlwch Anglesey, a baker. I have his later years in Anglesey in the 1841,51 and 61 censuses but I believe he went to liverpool to seek his fortune !

He is listed as a retired baker and landed proprietor in the 1861 census, living at "Bryntirion", Llangeinwen, Anglesey, Wales.

His 3 children were born in Liverpool - Emma (1822), Margaret (1823) and Hugh (1831) but I cannot find any trace of them there.

I think his wife may have been Mary

I have found records in the Trade Directories (1828 to 1837) of a Hugh Pritchard a biscuit and ship's bread maker with a premises at 1 New Quay and 22 Bath Street but not sure if he "lived above the shop" as it were or lived elsewhere.

Any help appreciated

Cheers

I can only see one Hugh Pritchard in 1871 census of almost the right age.

I know this isn't going to help much, but could they hve been born in Liverpool, and baptised elsewhere? Or were they Catholic?
I am Australian, from all the lands I come (my ancestors, at least!)

Perhaps I should give you the link to the anglesey board post? Pg1 details his death and the inscription on the family plot. Like I say, I have him from the 1841-1861 census and he died on Dec 5th 1862 aged 77.

Here's the Anglesey side of the discussion:

There is a marriage:

13January 1818 Liverpool St Peter

Hugh Pritchard Biscuit Baker
Ellen Griffiths, spinster signs herself Ellinor
Both of Liverpool
Witnesses William Roberts and Mary Roaberts ( perhaps should be Roberts?)

You say his wife may be Mary. Is that name on the gravestone?

1841 has his occupation as a Farmer  ???
H0107/1360 bk9 f9 p9
Hugh age 55
Margaret 15
Hugh 10

1851 still a farmer H0107/2516 f349 p12

1861 Retired baker and landed proprietor RG9/4345 f4 p1

Does any other document list him as a Baker or could this 1861 census just be an error and should read retired farmer  :-\
