Tyrpenery Sunday School, Morriston.
« on: Saturday 06 February 16 13:31 GMT (UK) »

I recently recieved an email from a lady in California, USA who had come across some Prayer Books that appeared to be the property of my late Grandmother Margaret Rees. I've never heard of Tyrpenery, Morriston. Has anyone on here have any local knowledge of it?

I will try and attach copies of the front cover and inside page.

Google maps shows Tirpenry St. which I think is in the same area. Nixon Terrace (near Tirpenry St.) was certainly Tyrpenery.

Thanks aghadowey.

I've made these pics smaller, and so perhaps they'll attach this time.

What a lovely find!

Can you find the family in 1881 census to see if they were living in that area?

It is quite amazing! Also that this lady has taken the trouble to search for my Grandmother, and then came across a Post that I had put on a Morriston Message Board about her.

I know that the Margaret Rees who was my Grandmother was Born at 18 Welcome Street Swansea in November 1867. She was certainly there on the 1881 Census with her parents Evan and Margaret Rees and Siblings. I know that her sisters Lizzie Rees and Sarah Ann Phillips, (Née Rees) emmigrated to the USA in the early 1900's. (I've found their entries on the Ellis Island Site). I can only guess that one of them had their sister's Prayer Book for some reason!

My subs to Ancestry have expired, and I can't find the 1881 Census Entry, but I'm wondering if Tyrpenery Sunday School would have been near to Welcome Street? (It was renamed Lower Slate Street at some stage).

I've managed to find their entry on the 1881 Census for Wales:

18 Welcome Street

Evan Rees 42 Copperman, born Morriston
Margaret Rees 43 born Aberavon
John Rees 22
Sarah Ann Rees 19
Margaret Rees 14
George Rees 13
Elizabeth Rees 9
Selina Rees 4
William Rees 2 (All children born Morriston).

It was Elizabeth and Sarah Ann who emmigrated to the USA in the 1900's.

After a lot of googling...

I think that the Sunday School in question might have been:

'Salem Sunday School, Nixon Terrace, Morriston'. Does that still exist, - does anyone know?
