Hi Chelle71

Look up George Lambourne in 1881
RG11 / 1446 / (ED3) / 38 /

using "page forward / page backward" you can follow the route that the census enumerator walked.

That should give you an approximate location.

Page 1 of that book holds a description or the route "he" walked.

I can say it is "High St"

Will transcribe the "walk" and get back (if someone else does not beat me to it)

Chelle

Page 1 of the relevant 1881 census book says . . . . .

Part of the parish of Northchurch from Mrs (?) to the Cow Roast on the south side and from Stag PH to the Grey Mare on the north side including Edd??? Street, New Road, Bunker's Farm, "X" Farm, next, Dudswell, Northcott Hill, Norcott Court, and all Lock Houses from opposite the Stag to and including the Cow Roast Locks.

Thanks for that apart from it really confusing me that still doesn't inform me of the location the The Swan Public House in Dudswell or mentions it in the information you have shared so I'm still confused

Chelle

Immediate answers in genealogy ?

This is one of the many instances where you may have to work with what information comes up
You may never get the exact (site of the) building

(Others may have a different approach.)
I was about to walk through the census "line by line" and publish to you what I find.
A reasonable amount of effort/time (don't you think?),

Expressing your disappointment
that I cannot immediately find the answer to your query . . . . .

Hi using the William Turton in 1861 census who was resident there in 1861, once again the Enumerators Walk gives it no mention, but looking at original/s it was close to the Cow Roast Lock?

Oh no please Ray do not take offence , I'm sorry if i seemed short . I read and read what you had posted and it totally confused me , I know there are no quick answers to FH I never ever assume there are and typing in text often taken in the wrong context  . I merely commented on still no clues to The Swan in Dudswell

Going by the 1851 census the walk of the enumerator was from Cow Roast to Dudswell Lock House.  Dudswell locks are numbers 47 and 48 on the Grand Union Canal.  After the lock house the next but one entry is The Swan.  After The Swan is a blacksmith.

The 1893 OS Map of Hertfordshire shows lock number 47 and to the south of it a Smithy.  It would seem that this was the location of The Swan.

Looking at a present day map I would have expected the location of The Swan to have been close to or at the junction of Wharf Lane, Norcott Hill and Dudswell Lane.

Chelle,
Yup took offence.
Erased, now apology received.

I am often accused of being too terse in messages / texts / posts (don't I mods?)
(Post in haste, not reading what you are about to post, etc)
As you see I ignored you  ;D and got on with it.
