Elizabeth Kelsey - What Became of her after 1851?
« on: Monday 08 February 16 21:32 GMT (UK) »
Hi all,

I am having trouble locating my 4x gt aunt Elizabeth Kelsey (1808-?) after 1851 & am hoping that my fellow RootsChatters my be able to help!

Elizabeth was born 25th March 1808 in Bletchingley in Surrey. In 1841 she along with her sister Ann Kelsey(1809-1884) is in Bell Street, Reigate (HO107/1076/7/36/25). I cannot make out their occupations as they are dittoed from the entry above. Can anyone make it out? There is a snippet of this census at the bottom of this  post.

In 1851, Elizabeth is still in Bell Street, Reigate (HO107/1599/122/4) where she is a Schoolmistress & is shown as head of household. Her sister Ann Kelsey married William Thornton on 10th Feb 1843 at St Mary's, Reigate. I have tracked the Thorntons & know all about them. Elizabeth however, just seems to vanish after 1851, no marriages or a death  can be found.

Can anyone help please?

Many thanks in advance.

Kind regards

David

The Genealogist has their occupation as Seminary. Apart from the usual meaning - a place where priests are trained, I see it can also be "A school of higher education, especially a private school for girls."

Amey, Elizabeth and Ann are all bracketed as Mistresses (presumably teachers at the seminary).

Hi Jan & Avm28,

Many thanks for your replies, very much appreciated indeed.

Jan, many thanks for that, having had a quick look at the censuses again, the pupils in both 1841 & 1851 do appear to be only girls, which would fit with what you found. Many thanks for that.

Avm228, thanks for that, I had wondered what it said in the brackets, now you've said it, its obvious! ::) ;D

My thanks again.

Kind regards

David

No luck with her after 1851 though - I've looked at 3 different sights.

Hi Jan,

Many thanks for looking anyway, much appreciated.

This one has been bugging me for a while now, don't seem to be able to make any progress with her at all. I'll just have to keep at it until I find her! ;D

Kind regards

I wonder if she went abroad as a missionary or similar? As you say there is no sign of a marriage or death.

She appears to have married Philip Green, a widower, in Brighton June quarter of 1852. In 1861 they are living in Sundridge Kent. Elizabeth was born 1808 Bletchingley, Surrey.
