William Calver of Halesworth
« on: Tuesday 09 February 16 02:16 GMT (UK) »
Hi All,

I am researching a William Calver from Halesworth.

He was born about 1837, to a father Samuel Calver a brickmaker.
In 1861 he married Louisa Tooke, and together they had 11 children.
His profession was initially Mariner, but later on Basket-Maker.
He died in 1912.

His mother was possibly Mary-Ann, with a possible sister of Mary.

I would be keen to hear from anyone else also researching William, or who may have further information.

Regards.

Thank-you - yes that is a good possibility for William's family.

Hi and welcome to Rootschat, re the above 1841 census, Ag Lab to Brick Maker not impossible but unlikely? It is from 1871 downwards that William appears to not state Halesworth as his place of birth, but clearly sticks to year of birth of 1837, in 1871 with Louisa and living next door to what appears to be his In-Laws William and Mary Tooke, he gives pob as Oulton, in 1861 newly married to Louisa occ Fisherman he now gives Blyford, and other than possibles b 1837 Westhall and Walpole in 1851 he cannot be located?

The other small point is other than the fact you appear to have a copy of his marriage to Louisa, what makes you think his Mother is a Mary Ann with a Sister Mary?
Who were the witnesses to the marriage?

Hi Keyboard, and thank-you for the welcome.

You've neatly summarised some of the problems that I'm having with William.

Unfortunately the witnesses for William & Louisa's marriage were both Tookes from Louisa's side of the family (I think Louisa's parents).

My mention of possible mother (Mary Ann) and sister (Mary) for William, are supposition only, based on :

- the 1841 census listing referred to above

- a baptism record for a William Calver, 15 Jan 1837, in Westhall, Suffolk, with parents Samuel & Mary

- some circumstantial evidence connecting to the Blything Union Workhouse at Bulcamp
-- the two Williams that you mention in the 1851 census were at the workhouse
-- there is also a Mary Calver, 18yo, born Westhall, in the workhouse in 1851
-- some earlier workhouse admission records tying together a Samuel & Marian Calver, with daughter Marian
-- the death of a Samuel Calver, 37yo, Brick-Maker at the workhouse in 1845
-- the death of a Mary Calver, 38yo, Widow of Samuel Calver Labourer at the workhouse in 1849

I have tried to trace the possible sister a little bit to see if there is a more definite connection, but have been unsuccessful so far.

Hope that all makes sense.

Thanks annes,

(I think you mean William for the 1837 baptism).

I have found those events online, but you have a bit more information than I have seen - particularly for the marriage.

What source are you using, if I may ask?

Yes sorry, I did mean William! (No option to modify the post at the moment  :()

I didn't realise this information was online.  I took the details from a typewritten and indexed transcript of the Halesworth parish registers, held in the Lowestoft records office.  Several of the local parishes have been transcribed in this way by volunteers over the years.

Aah I see - well I appreciate your effort in checking those records - thank-you.

Yes they are online (familysearch.org, Ancestry, FindMyPast etc), but don't have all of the information of the transcribed records that you refer to.
