Hi KHP,

See Repy #7........

Re:The Thomas (or Maurice?) Hawthorne mentioned as having died in the Bay of Islands, has already been discounted by the OP. For my own curiosity; are you able find any burial details for this 19 year old?

Minniehaha.

Maurice HAWTHORNE, 1879, aged 19 years..... Location  - Burial Register Kaikoura County

Cheers

Thank you KHP. Not exactly the Bay of Islands then, where Thomas is said to have died.  ???

Hi ronsaghey,

Going to throw this spanner into the works.   There is an online tree for Thomas and Dorothy ... it states that there was a son, named Samuel born 1866 • Greenock, Bruce, Ontario, Canada.

This tree has him married and still in Canada in 1912, but as we know trees aren't always right, so it might pay to follow up the following with printouts.

There is a Samuel Hawthorne who died in 1932, buried in Hillsborough.

http://www.aucklandcity.govt.nz/dbtw-wpd/cemeteries/cemetery.html

There are 3 snippets of his death on Papers Past, but the following is the interesting part.   The gentleman who identified the body, is related by marriage.  George Frederick Cross married Flora Moss in 1917 and she is the daughter of Samuel's sister Margaret.

In 1928 Charles and Margaret Moss were living in Mt Eden according to the Electoral Roll.

Good find KHP,,it leads to more questions  the PapersPast states
"Twelve months ago, said witness, Hawthorne was left a legacy of £105 as his share in his deceased sister's estate. "

and also

" lived with his half-sister in Auckland until November last"

The question is,was Samuel and the sister who left him money born before Thomas and Dora married, was the marriage to Dora, Thomas' second marriage.

Just thinking out loud here ;D ;D

Cheers Janette

You are allowed to think out loud Janette, we find what we can, and we never know which way it is going to go when we help people, and then it is up to the Original Poster to go chasing up with Printouts etc.  I think the Canadian Birth will need looking into.

Thomas Hawthorn was previously married:

http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=hawthorne&id=I237

His first wife, Catherine, and their four children are on the 1861 census for Greenock Township, but there's no sign of any of the children on the 1871 census, so did his first wife and children all die?

Thomas had a brother named Samuel Hawthorn, born 1839 Scotland died September 6, 1922 Greenock Township.  Thomas also had a nephew named Samuel Hawthorn, son of his brother Samuel, who was born in 1875.

Thanks for the update ronsaghey, the tree you posted has no mention of the 2 girls so may not be very accurate,it does have a Samuel as a child of Thomas and Dora although the information KHP found indicates he may well be the child of Catherine and Thomas born C 1862

Death 1932/1665   Hawthorne    Samuel       70Y

The money he came into may have come from Either Sara Jane or Eliza Ann

Cheers Janette

The info I found didn't list Catherine and Margaret.   As suggested by Beg in Reply #2 it would be a good idea to get the death printouts, of Thomas/Dora this will have the number of living issue to the marriage.  I don't have access to Canadian records so can't check the birth record of Samuel out.
