The Samuel Hawthorn who died in 1932 was 70, giving him a birth year of 1862. I have access to Canadian records and there are no Canadian matches.  I think the Samuel Hawthorn born after 1866 refers to Thomas Hawthorn's nephew Samuel and there could have been some confusion about that. This is the 1891 census:

Catherine St. George Hawthorn was born on July 5, 1867 at sea on board the S.S. St. George - Latitude: 52 07 N Longitude: 36 02W, which is about halfway between the UK and Canada. Her parents were married on April 19, 1866.

This is the 1861 census that references Thomas Hawthorn, his first wife and family:

The Samuel Hawthorn who died in 1932 could have been English. Family Search has a Samuel Hawthorn who was born the March quarter of 1862 in Alcester, Warwickshire:

What I'm trying to find with New Zealand records is information on George Gushing Gardner.  New Zealand, Electoral Rolls, 1853-1981 Residence: 1911 - Thames, Waikato has a George Gusson Gardner living in Mercury Bay, with his profession as Bushman. Would this be the same man as the George Gersham Gardner who was buried in Totara Cemetery in Thames in 1955?

Do we need to start a new topic for this, perhaps?

Yes one and the same.   The middle names will be transcription errors.

Whitianga is the main settlement of Mercury Bay.  Catherine was listed as being in Whitianga while George was listed as Mercury Bay in the Electoral Rolls.

What I suggest is getting the death notice for George.

1935 Catherine and George are living in Whitianga, the district being Thames. He is listed as just his first name if you want to check it out.

Agree with KHP that middle name of George GARDNER is likely to have been the subject of transcription errors.  ;D

Interestingly, in the Will of Catherine GARDNER ... and the actual will (document) spells her names as "Cathrine", her husband is named as "George Gusham GARDNER".

In the Will (dated 191) of Dora HAWTHORNE, Married Woman of Whitianga, (d. 1920) her daughter is named as
"Catherine St. George Smith Howard Forbes GARDINER, wife of George GARDINER, of Mercury Bay".

GARDNER - George & Catherine :

Had checked electoral rolls prior to KHP's post, and for the most part, over the years Catherine's husband is listed as "George" (no second name or initial --- likewise for Catherine).

The exception is >>

1911 - Waikato - Thames

GARDNER - George Gusson - Mercury Bay - bushman
GARDNER - Catherine - Whitianga - married

[Different addresses ... would think as a bushman George spent much time away from his residence, and so the address given is likely that of his workplace (or near to it) ? ]
