Burial Place in Edinburgh?
« on: Tuesday 09 February 16 13:19 GMT (UK) »
My ewlative died in Edinburgh in 1914 in Craiglockhart Poorhouse. He lived in the Grassmarket.

I have a copy of the death certificate signed by someone at the Poorhouse. I also have copies of his birth and marriage certificates and census entries up to 1901 all in Scotland.

I cannot find where he is buried? Tried newspapers - nothing. Edinburgh Council cemeteries - nothing. Surely there must be a record of burial somewhere.

Any suggestions - have I missed simething? Thanks

As an aside I could not find him in the 1911 census either.

Although different time & place, my 3xgt grandfather died in 1885 in the Union Workhouse, Malton, North Yorkshire.  His death was registered by the Master of the workhouse.  I was informed by Borthwick Institute, York, when I asked them to do some research on my behalf, that they couldn't find his burial for me, suggesting that he may have been buried in the grounds of the workhouse.  Have not taken this further as my local record office states that very few records exist, but perhaps your relative's poorhouse may have kept records about burials in their own grounds.....?

Thank you Tillypeg. I checked there are no records for Craiglockhart.

Would anyone with local knowledge know which cemetery Craiglockart Poorhouse, Edinburgh used when inmates died and required burial?

Were not most workhouse inmates who died there usually popped into public graves? I'd've thought they would have been interred in consecrated ground, at least, certainly in earlier years.
Threlfall (Southport), Isherwood (lancs & Canada), Newbould + Topliss(Derby), Keating & Cummins (Ireland + lancs), Fisher, Strong& Casson (all Cumberland) & Downie & Bowie, Linlithgow area Scotland . Also interested in Leigh& Burrows,(Lancashire) Griffiths (Shropshire & lancs), Leaver (Lancs/Yorks) & Anderson(Cumberland and very elusive)

Mortonhall wanted £16 fee despite me providing exact name and date of death. No thank you.
