Craiglockhart would have a contract with one of the public cemeteries in Edinburgh, not necessarily the nearest.

Hi hms racker.

I live in Edinburgh and there are a number of burial places used by the various Edinburgh Poorhouses at that time. The nearest ones to Craiglockhart Poorhouse were Morningside, Dalry, North Merchiston and The Grange. There appears to be no burial records for these poor people. Usually the deceased were buried in a communal unmarked grave. Although I believe it was consecrated ground.

Even if you did pay Mortonhall the money you have very little guarantee that they would find a record.

Sorry but it looks like you will not find his final resting place.

Sorry hms racker

A few years ago Central Library gave me the Mortonhall email address when I was looking for the burial place of my g grandmother.  I emailed and they emailed the details plus a map of the cemetery it didn't cost me anything,  things have changed a lot since then.

Regards

Common ground burials would still be recorded by the cemetery

Access to burial records

6.   Detailed burial records are required to be kept by local authorities for all burial grounds in their care under the 1885 Act.
7.   These records are exceptionally valuable for family history research and also for monument conservation purposes, and yet they are also fragile and potentially vulnerable if general access is allowed. Currently, access to many of the records is restricted in order to conserve them, but this may not be possible under the Freedom of Information Act 2000.

8.   Consideration needs to be given to surveying the records held by local authorities and others, including commercial cemetery companies, and devising a strategy to allow access without compromising the long-term conservation of the original documents

I don't get the "consecrated ground" business, these cemeteries will either be municipal or owned by companies. Catholic cemeteries were obviously consecrated but in a non-denominational context and with a dozen different Protestant flavours, it's surely irrelevant.

Hi Skoosh,

What I probably should have said instead of "consecrated" ground was that they were buried within the Cemetery as opposed to a corner outside the main burial area which was usually for suicides etc.

Here in Edinburgh there is only one Catholic Cemetery - Mount Vernon - although many Catholics are buried in others Cemeteries throughout the city. The burial being conducted by a priest or minister.

Hope this clears up my "irrelevance".
