Frederick Arthur Margetson
« on: Thursday 11 February 16 20:03 GMT (UK) »
Frederick Arthur Margetson was my Great-Uncle.

He was born in Corpusty, Norfolk in 1883.

In 1899 he signed up to the army and was attached to the 3rd Bn. Norfolk Regiment.

He was discharged in 1903 by purchase.

By 1911 he had moved to the North-East of England.

During WWI he served in the Northumberland Fusiliers and was killed in 1918, being buried in Glasgow.

I have been given some photo's by a Margetson relation but she doesn't know who the people are.

I think one is a WWI photo of a Northumberland Fusiliers soldier.

If so, Frederick is the only Margetson I can find serving in WWI in the Northumberland Fusiliers.

I also have a civilian photograph with a chap with exactly the same moustache - do you think it is the same person?

Also, I have an older photo of a soldier taken in Mussoorie and Allahabad.

was the 3rd Norfolk in or near those Indian towns any time between 1899 and 1903?

And do you think the uniform could be Norfolk Regiment?

Thanks,

Darin.

The 3rd Battalion in the Norfolk Regiment were Militia, ie part-timers in peacetime. He joined during the Boer War so he was full-time during the dates given. They appear to have stayed at home. This allowed a Regular battalion to serve overseas.

Purchasing a discharge in the Militia cost £2.

The photograph with a grenade cap badge will be for the Northumberland Fusiliers. I am still looking at the third photograph. The first looks like him in the 1920s. Maybe later.

I have had a longer look at the third photograph and you can make out that his trousers are creased. From the experts on the photography section it appears that this became the trend in late Edwardian times. If so you can date the photograph to (say) 1908 to 1914. He is wearing two good conduct badges  - the chevrons on his left arm. This would be for five years good conduct.

Three of the four battalions of the Norfolks and Northumberland Fusiliers were in India at the time. But none close to the two locations of the phographers business.

If you have the original can you provide a high-res scan of the collar and helmet badges? If you believe it is FA Margetson it would be possible for him to enlist as a Regular in 1903/4 and been transferred to the First Class Army Reserve in time for the 1911 census. Reservists did not record the fact on the census/BMDs etc.

He would have been recalled in 1914 and may have transferred to the NF then.

What was his occupation for his marriage in 1907 in Norfolk?

Ken

Hi I am a volunteer researcher with the Northumbria World War One Commemoration Project and we have ben researching Frederick Arthur Margetson. Did you ever get confirmation regarding the photo you posted? If it is Frederick Margetson it would be great if you would give your permission for us to use it on our database. See northumbriaworldwarone.co.uk/database. Many thanks  Diane

Hi Diane

We are positive it is him.

You can use the photos of him.

Do you have a good copy of his grave?

The one on Findagrave looks like someone has super-imposed the writing on which spoils it somewhat?

Thanks

Darin.

Thanks Darin. I am afraid we don't have a better copy of his gravestone. We have volunteers going out to France/Belgium to photograph graves but no organised trips to Glasgow. We do have a volunteer who has a relative in Glasgow so I will try him and keep you posted! Many thanks Diane
