Wilkinson Dent
« on: Friday 12 February 16 02:30 GMT (UK) »
FreeReg has a Wilkinson Dent baptised 27 Feb 1827 in Keelby, Lincs, son of Harriet Dent and shown as illegitimate. One might guess that the father was a Wilkinson, but he is not named in the record, simply listed as a servant.

In 1832, a Harriet Dent married my ggGrandfather Henry Sargent, a Master carpenter of Marshchapel, and she appears in various Broughton censuses as born Keelby.

I cannot identify any child of their's with an 1827 birthdate in censuses from 1851 onwards though they have a Thomas Sargent, age 14, with them in 1841 Broughton...predates their marriage and suggests an 1827 birthdate. But, given Henry's trade, this could have been a nephew.

Can anyone shed any light on Wilkinson Dent please?

Although the Occp Servant is down as Fathers Occp it is more likely Harriets Occp as I have seen this on many records of illegitimate Children.

Its strange as I just entered Wilkinson Dent on Familysearch, any England (no dates) and heaps came up.
The name Wilkinson was used often as a second name for many Dents born all over England.
There is a Wilkinson Dent Christened Westmorland 1800.

Joseph/Ann Dent, Harriets Parents name a Child Newark in 1802 so the Family likes unusual christian names!

Now I did notice this though;

Thomas WILKINSON Married Charlotte HALL, 10 July 1828, St Bartholomew, Keelby
Both Single

1841 Census
Keelby, Lincs
HO107/638/11/Keelby
Thomas Wilkinson, 40, Shoemaker
Charlotte Wilkinson, 30
William Wilkinson, 10
George Wilkinson, 8
Thomas Wilkinson, 6
All down as born in County

1851 Census
Keelby, Lincs
HO107/2114/24/19
Thomas Wilkinson, 49, Head, Mar, Cordwainer (Shoemaker), born Brocklesby, Sussex
Charlotte Wilkinson, 40, Wife, Mar
Geoe Wilkinson, 18, Son, Unm, Cordwainer
Thos Wilkinson, 16, Son, Unm, Cordwainer
Oliver Wilkinson, 5, Son, Scholar
All but Thomas born Keelby

So did Harriet have the local Shoemakers Baby?
Or is the Wilkinson christian name a red herring?

Gosh Thomas/Charlotte has 12 Children 1829-1848. Sadly most of them died. Two of them 8 days apart 1840 age 4 and 2.

Trish :)

EDIT , looks like 14 Children up til 1851 !

Thanks Trish,

A case of "come up and see my last" one suspects.

I still sense that Wilkinson Dent was renamed Thomas Sargent after the Henry/Harriet marriage in 1832.

Thomas Sargent appears in later censuses as a joiner (Henry's trade) though his birthplace varies between Hull (where H and H married) and Louth (where two of their other children were born). No Thomas was born 1827ish in those places in my sources and I can exclude the Marshchapel Thomas b 1827.

Its a tad tenuous, but so much is, isn't it
