Errors in FamilySearch?
« on: Friday 12 February 16 09:18 GMT (UK) »
In the 1861 census in FamilySearch, Agustine (sic) Bibby & Ann had 2 sons named William.
Looking at 1871 I believe that the 2nd William was actually Robert F bc1856 in Liverpool.
Robert F may have been Robert H or Robert T according to FreeBMD.
Can someone please check the original census for transcription errors?

Can't find them in 1861 - can you post a link please? Or tell us where in the census to look for this family?

It's Augustin on FamilySearch too. Not "Agustine (sic)" !

And there are two sons named William listed on the original image.

Yes. I didn't check back the spelling in 1861.  ::)
Sorry. It's Agustine in 1871 in FamilySearch

The transcription isn't wrong, but it's possible that the names were copied down wrongly by the enumerator. It's uncommon (but not unheard of) to have two children with the same first name. Bear in mind though that his birthplace may be wrong too - looks like the family moved around a bit, so "William 2" might have been born in London like the elder children. By 1861 the parents might have forgotten which children were born where!

There are no Robert Bibbys born c1856 in London but there are 2 born in Liverpool in 1856.
So does the original clearly say Robert F in 1871?

Robert Fillingham died 1878 in Newcastle aged 21 (FreeBMD)
Thanks everyone.

1871 Census – RG 10/5072 pages 32 & 33

Agustine, Bibby, Head, 50, Lancashire, Liverpool
Anne, Bibby, Wife, 39, Do
William A, Bibby, Son, 17, London, Middlesex
Thomas H, Bibby, Son, 16, London, Do
Robert F, Bibby, Son, 14, Lancashire, Liverpool
James A, Bibby, Son, 12, Do
Elizabeth E, Bibby, Daughter, 10, Newcastle on Tyne
Albert E, Bibby, Son, 8, Durham, Gateshead
Allice P, Bibby, Daughter, 6, Newcastle on Tyne
David H, Bibby, Son, 4, Newcastle on Tyne
John B, Bibby, Son, 1, Do

I would not be confident on this image to transcribe the letter as either F or T.
The enumerator slips between a similar letter when writing Tyne and Fitter though the loop is slightly smaller on writing Tyne.

1861 Census – RG 9/3811 page 13

Augustin, Bibby, Head, 40, Lancashire, Liverpool
Annie, Bibby, Wife, 29, Do
William A, Bibby, Son, 9, Middlesex, St Luke's
Thomas H, Bibby, Son, 6, Do, Do
William H, Bibby, Son, 4, Lancashire, Liverpool
James A, Bibby, Son, 2, Do, Do
Elizabeth, Bibby, Daughter, 3 mths, Newcastle Tyne

It does seem that for some reason Robert F, Bibby, Son, 14 on the 1871 census is the same person as William H, Bibby, Son, 4 but either the family changed the name or the enumerator made an error as the images clearly show Robert & William.

Cheers
Guy
