John Arliss, butcher, Louth (died 1847)
« on: Friday 12 February 16 09:44 GMT (UK) »
I have long sought John Arliss' parents.

John Arliss, butcher, was born about 1789 or 90 based on his death age 57 in 1847.

He married Sarah Hockney in 1818 and ran a butchery on Walkergate, Louth (one of 2 on that street) which was taken over by surviving family.

I am dubious of others' interpretation of his parents as John Arliss and Mary Dobson (their son John was b 1787 in Yarburgh). Here's why:

1828 and 29 Pigotts Directories have a George Arliss, butcher on the same street (Walkergate) but George has gone by the 1841 census. John may have taken this business over from George . It may even have been a long term family enterprise because George Arliss was apprenticed to a John Arliss, butcher, even earlier (1773).

So, I'm wondering if John Arliss could be a son of George Arliss and Bellamy Atkin who married in Louth in 1784...even though I can't find a record of his birth.

If these dates are right, he can't be the father of your John, who you say was was born 1791.

Thankyou one and all,

That knocks out my hypothesis that John Arliss (died 1847) took over the business from George Arliss.

Butchery is clearly an Arliss trade though. As well as the two Johns and George mentioned in my original post there's also a William in 1841.

Given that I have Arliss's in two different branches of my tree, and an ever growing spread sheet of hundreds of them, I'll persevere.

Thanks again
