firstly - thanks for all the help and pointers, much appreciated.

would John have listed his fathers name for the marriage if his father was dead?
I ask as I've scrolled through the 1901 returns and the most likely looking, to me anyway, is living with his mother who's listed as a widow.

So... http://www.rootschat.com/links/01h1r/  gets you all the John Twomeys who died in Cork between 1872 and 1901 on Civil Reg, of these 66 you can rule many out due to age as father would have been born 1840/50's most probably.

I don't believe that this is your John as he is still living in High Street with his Mother in 1911 LINK

There is a possibility that this is John as TOOMEY in 1901 in Co. Wicklow LINK
I love the occupation of another member of this household "explosive packer"!

or here in Dublin also as TOOMEY LINK although this name could be mis-transcribed and actually by TORMEY

It's early hallmark - time to improve!!

bean - don't worry; ruling out is as important as in but can be time consuming!

Just a thought - have you seen the original of where his father's name is recorded?
It is not on the church records LINK but I have seen THOMAS mis-transcribed in the past as FRANCIS
Just in case you are working from a transcription - it may be something to consider
