Home in Broadgreen Road, Old Swan, Liverpool 1929
« on: Friday 12 February 16 12:53 GMT (UK) »
Can anyone who has access to a  1920s /1930s  directory for Liverpool tell me what the name of this place was, please ? It was run by Catholic nuns, but I don't know what order they belonged to.
I've found references online to a 'Home for Incurables' at a slightly later date. Was that its official name ?
I can't get to Liverpool record office for some weeks and if I'm right, this was the place where my grandfather was being cared for before he died in the Smithdown Road hospital (previously Toxteth Park Workhouse).
I gather that the building was later part of St. Agnes' Secondary School but I think its still there, though now something else, perhaps converted into apartments (?)

Was it May Place - Broadgreen Road? The house became a catholic Girls School and then St. Vincents Hospice for the Dying, and now a shelter housing complex . You can see it on this 1927 map https://www.old-maps.co.uk/#/Map/339472/390897/12/101104 (you will have to zoom out)

Broad Green Road Old Swan

28 May Place Catholic Girls' Home

Kelly's Directory 1938

Broad Green Road Old Swan

28 St Vincent's Hospice for the Dying,
Sister Anthony Superioress

In the 1900s there was an RC girls reformatory school there it appears as St Vincent's Hospice on a 1927 map of the area so change of use between 1911 and 1927.

Bingo ! That must be the place. But no mention of what variety of nuns ran it ? Thank you . There are definitely times when you can't see wood for trees  At least, I can't. I had looked at May Place for other reasons, but hadn't realised that was the same building.  Next I want a photograph !

Thanks again to Stan and Blue. I have got my cousin to look at the photos and she recognises the place as the building pointed out to her by her mother 40 years ago. So now I have the name of the place and a definite identification ! That's wonderful.
