Hi nudge67,

Do you have further information re Edward being Irish?
Does John Lewis give a father's occupation on his marriage certificate?

Regards
Heywood

There is also mention of a William, also with no father named
https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:NBC3-R49

There's this 1847 marriage for a William Cassidy to  Elizabeth Trimnell
https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:NLWK-K42

son Joseph Ch 1848 Ramsbury
https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:J9FG-DLR

Couldn't find them on 1851 census to check William's dob & pob  ???

There is however this public tree on Ancestry with the following info.
would need to be verified

William Cassidy born c 1819  married Elizabeth Trimnell
siblings
Sarah 1821,
John Lewis 1824-1891 Prospect Australia
Joseph abt 1826
William b1819 died 1855 Newstead Victoria Australia
Death of father Richard Edward Cassidy abt 1827 born 1795
Death of mother Catherine nee Fowler 1 Oct 1881 Ramsbury born 1801

As you don't have a date for Edwards death It may be worthwhile taking a look at the original entry for John Lewis's & William's baptism.  It is not usual for just a mothers name to appear on the record and there may be some additional information which does not appear on transcripts.

Thanks all, this is fascinating!

Yes, John Lewis was recorded as a bricklayer (and later a mason, and a builder). He and Jane did marry in 1847 an the C of E (forgot that I had that when writing the post).

They sailed to Adelaide in 1851 with their 3 year old daughter Sarah aboard the Marion, leaving Plymouth 6 days before the census ::)

I think an son had died early that year, age about 2?
A daughter Elizabeth was born at sea on 6 June, 3 weeks before they were shipwrecked on a reef one day out of Adelaide. Several other children were born in Adelaide.

Nudge67 is your surname Cassidy? If so, a y-DNA test could provide useful information, particularly for Irish ancestry.
