Where in County Mayo
« on: Monday 15 February 16 15:05 GMT (UK) »
I wondered whereabouts in Ireland my gt. grandmother was from. On all the census lists she is down as being born in Ireland but on one of them her brother who was two years older was born in Co.Mayo so I assume that she was as well. I think they moved to Liverpool as children or teenagers.
Her name was Catherine Golding and her brother was Thomas Golding born 1839. their parents were John Golding and Esther Golding (cant find any info about them either) so I though if I could get some info on Thomas then maybe the rest of the family details would come to light, possibly they were all from Co.Mayo.
The last couple of generations have spelt Golding like that but I know through searching that some spell it Goulding.
Hope someone can maybe point me in the right direction.
Many thanks
Cecile

Link  "My ancestor came from Ireland - where do I start?"

What religious denomination were your Golding family?

http://registers.nli.ie/#home_map

Link for RC parish registers free to search.
Unfortunately some parish records may not start early enough and many are difficult to read.

This link will provide some general info on the name, including distribution and spelling variations.
Looking at the distribution of the surname there seems to be a higher concentration close to Co Galway so maybe start at that end.
Best of luck

Hi
I think the Goldings were Catholics. I will have a look through the info you have sent me.
Many thanks for that.
Best wishes

Hello Cecile,
Sure you must have  looked on family  search. If not worth a look.
In 1861 there is a family of Golding living in Bell Street Liverpool
John Golding and family etc.
One census does say they came from Mayo.
Looking in the 1901 census Ireland by this time the family were in Liverpool but it does give you an idea.  There are lots of Golding in Mayo But the hard part is still finding a Parish.
But you never know may ring a bell for you.
                             Cheers Lep.

In the tithe records these are the 2 spellings.
Can't see Catherine or Thomas's birth/baptism records. Sorry.

Hello Lep and Maggsie
Thank you for your help. You say Lep, that there are a lot of Goldings in Mayo so at least I have got the right place! Thomas and Catherine's father was John Golding, so you never know!
Thanks ever so much
Best wishes

Hello,

In 1851 your family are listed as Golden.
I have Golden ancestry and on one birth record the name is shown as Goulding so they re more options!

There is a published tree for your family which has place of birth for Thomas as Killala, Mayo but I can't see any source for this.
My family are from near there and there were a lot of Goldens in that area.

I did try to look at some parish  records around Killala but Your dates are quite early. It would be a long laborious search to look at all Mayo parish records.  :-\

Hello Haywood
I too found my family listed as Golden or Goulding. It makes you wonder what their actual name was!
I will go through the website you have sent me. I did have a quick look and like you said, it starts a bit later than my Gt Uncle and Gt Grandmothers birth. However, I will go through it you just never know what you might find.
Thank you again for getting in touch. If you find anything else or think of anything else I would love to hear from you.
Best wishes
Cecile
