Comrie - Elizabeth Dundas McGregor/Macgregor
« on: Wednesday 17 February 16 15:40 GMT (UK) »
I am trying to find out about my 2nd great grandmother Elizabeth Dundas MacGregor, born in Comrie, Perthshire in 1825. I would like to know why her second name is Dundas, as this often (but not always) indicates a family connection on a mother or grandmother's side of the family. Her mother was Ann Drummond, her father Gregor McGregor, her husbands Peter Stobie and later John Johnman. Any information or advice about this would be very welcome.  Thanks.

She was baptised 27 JUN 1825 as Elisabeth McGregor no 2nd/middle name.  Is Dundas something she adopted?

Could be from her grandparents, then again no family connection at all; a close friend or even a place name.

Hi

As DonM says maybe no connection whatsoever and may have adopted middle name or thought "Henry Dundas" was a local hero.

Hi,

The Dundas family owned the Dunira Estate, and Elisabeth's father is probably the same person living on the estate who signed the Acknowledgement of the Chief of Clan Gregor in 1822;

Grigor; smith; Danina; (Perthshire);

The parish register says Elisabeth was born at Tullibanachar, which is probably Wester Tullybannocher, which is part of the estate, and where there was a smithy.

So, it could be she was named after the laird, (during the prohibition of the clan name it was common practice to use the laird's name). However, I think she was probably named after a member of his family. As well as a reference to a grandparent, or great grandparent, children were sometimes given a middle name from a friend's surname, and when this was done it was because the child was given the full name of the friend. So, if this is the case, then she was named after an Elisabeth Dundas. Henry's eldest daughter was called Elisabeth, and she probably spent her early years living on the estate, so maybe she was a friend of Gregor or Ann.

I think this is more likely than Dundas being a family name, because it's not a local surname.

John.

John, That's really helpful.  Thanks very much.  I'm sorry I've taken so long to pick this up - a lot's been happening in the last couple of weeks.
Regards
Mary
