I am searching for the birth date and any family history of William Charters who died in Newcastleton in 1887. Any information would be appreciated.

Hi John,

Welcome to Roots Chat.
If you view his death certificate via Scotlands People (you will need to register and pay!) -- it will give you his parents and wife's details as he died in Scotland. You will be able to view it immediately on line.

The records give much more informative than English ones.

You will also be able to track him backwards on census records, either on Ancestry (subscription site - and you will only see a transcription) - or on Scotlands People where you will see actual census but have to use purchased units to view each census.
Places of interest;
Lancashire, West Yorkshire, Southern Ireland, Scotland.

Thank you for the information. I have his death certificate but unfortunately there are no details of his mother or father. I believe he was the widower of a Mary Armstrong and I will try that route. I plan to visit Newcastleton this year and would like to trace my family history even further back than this. Regards.

Hi John - I have had a look at it - you are right, parents not shown, although his wife is. At least you have his approximate birth year -( if the son in law who registered the death knew his correct age of course).

I will look at census records.

OK -- according to the 1881 census he was then 83 and born in England. Still working as an Agricultural labourer. Living in Castleton.
Already a Widower.
Had a grandson living with him.

Have to go and see to the evening meal now, but I will look for more later.

1871 - census William aged 67 Farm Servant born England living on a farm in Mains Catleton.

He is shown as married -- but wife not with him.
--------------------
1861 - census - aged 58 with wife Mary aged 48. Mary also born in England.
Children living with them are;
Margaret Paton aged 28 - born England
Jane Charters aged 19 - born England
Helen Charters aged 11 - born England (this might be an Eleanor)
William Charters aged 14 - born England
also several grandchildren present.
---------------------------------
1851 - census
The family are in Bellbank Cumberland.
William aged 56 born Stanwix, Cumberland
Mary aged 45 born Bewcastle, Cumberland
Children
Mary 13
Jane 11
Ann 8
William 5
Eleanor 2
all the children born Bewcastle.

So William moved to Scotland between 1851 and 1861.
---------------------
I will see what else there is!
Places of interest;
Lancashire, West Yorkshire, Southern Ireland, Scotland.

At this point I cannot find a marriage of William to Mary Adamson - likely to be in Cumberland.
Nor can I see an obvious baptism for him.

Cumberland Parish registers are rather sparse on line I'm afraid.

Maybe if you put a plea on the Cumberland Board - someone may have access to the registers for those birth places.

By the way - just in case you don't know - his wife Mary died in 1878 aged 71. The parents on the death record are shown as Andrew Armstrong and Mally (maiden name unknown).

Both a son and a grandson of William and Mary were named Andrew - clearly after Mary's father.

Interestingly there is a Baptism of a Mary Ann Charters at the Scotch Presbyterian Church, Bewcastle, Cumberland - on 4/2/1829.
Parents William Charters, Single Man and Mary Armstrong, Single Woman.

So William and Mary were not married at that point.

As this baptism is at a Presbyterian Church - maybe William or Mary's ancestry goes back into Scotland.
