Hierom Mcgilvrea
« on: Friday 19 February 16 17:01 GMT (UK) »
I've found a 1755 (Rafford, Morayshire) marriage record for
HIEROM McGilivrea to Isobel Sclate (or Sclat).

Any ideas where his first name comes from (Gaelic? Latin? Greek?!!) or an Anglicised version of his name?  Nearest I could come up with Jerome/George.

I'm sure I won't be able to get any further back than him.  The name never re-appears in any of his descendants.

I've Googled and Binged until I'm worn out, so any ideas would be welcome!

Thanks Kay....

It's a very unusual name for that area, don't you think?

Kate,

I love the old and odd names, so I l just had to look a little deeper.  Although this name is unusual, it seems somewhat exclusive to Moray all 18thC and earlier.  I counted 5 marriages and 5 births using this spelling over a 150 year span from the early 1600's.  David Dobson mentions the possibility of Flemish connection in Moray and a name that popped up was Hierom. which if you google Flemish Moray you will find it.  There was a St. Hierom as well.

Oooohhhh.......only 5 marriages and 5 births?

Wonder if it's worthwhile tracking them ALL to make a link to *my* Hierom, who married Isobel in 1755?!!

Thank you

Sorry, Skoosh, but can you explain, please?  What makes you think that?
