Inland Revenue Police Register at National Archives, Kew
« on: Saturday 20 February 16 15:54 GMT (UK) »
I have spent almost 4 years trying to track down my gg grandfather, Edward Hay.
He lived in Coleraine, Co Londonderry, from the time of his marriage (if not before) in 1831 until his death in 1890.  On his marriage record, he is described as a 'policeman' and I was hopeful of finding him in the Royal Irish Constabulary register; but he's not there.
A genealogist has suggested Edward may have been a revenue policeman, the register of which, I understand, is in Kew.  These records have not been digitised and it requires someone in person to visit/look up.
I live in Belfast!  :'(
Is there any other way of accessing these records, can anyone tell me?
I would be so grateful for any help or guidance.
Thank you.

You could email the archives to ask them if they hold his record:

Thank you Nanny Jan
It was the Nat Archives folks who told me I would need to go in person to look this up; the only other option was to pay one of their listed researchers.
I was hoping there might be another way of accessing the information, but I may have to accept I will have to pay someone to do it on my behalf.  (It cost me £50 just to find out his record may be there so I am trying to avoid further unnecessary or excessive expense.)
I appreciate you getting in touch.

I am in exactly the same boat. I found my dh's gg grandfather after 4 years of searching. His death cert says policeman and after some digging it turns out he too is probably revenue police.

I am looking for any details on Robinson  McKinley.  I believe that in 1836 he was with an Irish Revenue Police party stationed at Learmont, County Londonderry. I am hoping to find his service details.

Have you looked in Jim Herlihy's book 'The Royal Irish Constabulary, A Complete Alphabetical List of Officers & Men' 1816 - 1922? Someone suggested to me that the list of Revenue Police are in it too. I can't access the book but asked on the Ireland board for a look up, but no response yet.

I could not find anything on the Inland Revenue Police. Is this link on Irish Revenue Police the correct organization.

Thanks for getting in touch - I have checked the Royal Irish Constabulary register - there's a copy held at PRONI in Belfast.  My Edward Hay isn't listed.  If it would help you, I am happy to check for your Robinson McKinley in that register next time I'm at PRONI.  PM me with any additional information you may have, and I'll take a look for him.

Thank you. I think it is  :)  Certainly, if I was looking myself, that's where I would start. I have literally just the word 'policeman' on his marriage record in 1831, and he doesn't appear in the Royal Irish Constabulary register, so it was suggested to me he might be revenue police and I should try Nat Archives.

The Irish Revenue Police were wound up in 1857, at which point many joined the RIC. (That in turn should get them listed in Jim Herlihy's book). See:
