battle of the Somme La Boisselle Tynesiders' memorial
« on: Sunday 21 February 16 15:57 GMT (UK) »
Have put this on the Northumberland board also.
We are going to make a visit to the Tyneside Scottish and Irish, Northumbrians, memorial at La Boisselle on the anniversary of the Battle of the Somme.
Does anyone know if there are any events/ commemorations taking place there?

Treetotal Carol,
I'll gladly take photos but I can't remember if this memorial has names of the Fallen on it.
It was raised privately by Tyneside residents on the site where so many of the lads gave their lives during the first hours of the battle.
Could I ask you which battalion of the Tyneside Scottish your man served in and where he lived?
My OH's grandfather Joseph West of Byker was in the 2 nd T/S Scottish which I think was the 21st Northumberland. He was one of the few survivors of that terrible day.

The 20th and he was from Hull. He enlisted with E.Yorks. regiment at Beverley and later transferred to the Tyneside Scottish NF.

If you are hoping to visit on 1 July please be aware that La Boiselle is within the advertised security cordon for that day's activities.  It is possible that you will not be allowed to enter the forbidden zone. Certainly the CWGC is advising that nearby cemeteries will not be accessible unless you have a ticket for the big shindig at Thiepval.

I'm searching for my g uncle Thomas Brown from Sunderland who survived the Somme whilst serving in the Tyneside Scottish ,are there any listings of survivors ? The story goes that he saved the life of an officer and lost his leg in the process.TIA

Lindylou does anyone have his medals his number will be impressed in rim.
If he did indeed lose a leg he will have been discharged with Silver War Badge. All surviving ww1records on the whole are on Ancestry or Find my past. Unfortunately a fire during blitz destroyed many records. Local papers are best source for lists etc.
Maybe start a new thread with what info you do have?
