Looking for family of Daniel MacDonald, born March 1st 1846 in Clackmannanshire, probably eldest son of Daniel MacDonald and Jane Hunter (married 1845). Emigrated to Australia, probably in 1860, by himself, possibly to join family. Became renowned missionary in New Hebrides before settling in Australia.

I wonder if this is them on this Ancestry transcription. It might be worth checking original on Scotlands People. David might be Daniel?

Yes, thank you. On the 1851 census the same information also, with the name Daniel perhaps being transcribed as David. However my difficulty is that I have no proof that this is my great grandfather. On his death certificate (1927, Australia) parents are listed as unknown although it is recorded that he was born in Clackmannanshire in 1846. The 1861 census has the same family  at New Sauchie with Daniel missing. I believe he came to Australia on the 'Lightning' from Liverpool in 1860 - but again, I am deducing this with no definite proof!

Hello,
I am also doing research on my MacDonald heritage and have ancestors by the name of Daniel MacDonald and Jane Hunter.  My ancestors had a son named Charles MacDonald born on 6 Oct 1866 in Alloa, Scotland who emigrated to the United States in 1887.  He became a naturalized citizen of the US (1918), married a woman from Scotland (Elizabeth MacGregor) in 1890 in Worcester, Massachusetts.  They had nine children.  They both died in eastern Massachusetts in the 1930s.  Charles and Elizabeth were my father's grandparents.  I don't know if the Daniel and Jane you are looking for information about are the same as my descendants.  I have not been able to find any information about them, and I don't know if my great grandfather Charles has siblings and if any of them also came to the USA.  I'm sorry I don't have any more information to share - this is the only family line I know very little about.  Leslie

Just to add, I've seen the name Donald being Daniel or David too.

Not sure that will help?

Hi lzc0

Welcome to RootsChat  :)

There are other children showing as born to Daniel McDonald and Jane Hunter, see www.rootschat.com/links/01is3/ for the index entries on Family Search. Original images available to view on www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk

Their marriage or banns show in the Old Parish Registers in 1845 https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XTLG-G9N

This looks to be the family in the 1861 census in Clackmannan:

Daniel Mcdonald 39  Gate Keeper At Ditteby b. Clackmannan
Jean Mcdonald 36 b. Alloa
Alex Mcdonald 13
Cathran Mcdonald 9
George Mcdonald 6
Ann Mcdonald 4
Andr Mcdonald 2
John Mcdonald 3 Months

Struggling to find the family in the 1871 census after Charles' birth so far.

By the way, as Annie mentions name variants for the name Daniel, Jane and Jean are also interchangeable. See this great site www.whatsinaname.net/female-names/Jane.html

Thank you all. It looks we may have a DNA connection. Thanks for the 1881 census information also.
