Charles GLIDEWELL of Stagsden
« on: Tuesday 23 February 16 17:41 GMT (UK) »
I'm trying to track down Charles Glidewell who appears aged 34 in the 1851 census for North End, Stagsden.

Christopher Glidwell    60     head
Lydia       "   69   wife
Charles    "      34   son
Elizabeth   "       7   granddaughter

I have confirming records for the other three: Elizabeth b 1844 is the daughter of Charles's sister Mary b 1922.
Charles does not appear in the 1841 census nor any after 1851. I have found no record of his birth or baptism (the census shows him as born in Stagsden), nor any record of his marriage, death or burial. I have searched for spelling variants as his father appears both as Glidwell and Glidewell.

Has anybody any idea where he can have got to?

As per Beds FHS Surname Index.....

Lydia Etrap married in Stagsden in 1809 as did a Chris GLIDALL

I've found Christopher & Lydia in 1841 with children Mary & James but no Charles

Hi John-P,
That's exactly what I have. So where has Charles in the 1851 census come from?
(I assume I'm not allowed to post the page of the census that shows the entry).
By 1851, son James was in his own household with his wife and family.

 Stagsden Willey Turvey Bedfordshire
 Christopher Glibwell     50
 Lydia Glibwell     55

Could James & Charles be the same person?

I have confirming records for the other three: Elizabeth b 1844 is the daughter of Charles's sister Mary b 1822.

What evidence of this please? Where is Mary in 1851?

I think Charles in 1851 is really Charles Gammons.... Ancestry suggest this also
Charles Gammons married Mary Glidewell at Stagsden on 5 Mar 1844.....
Eliz Gammons daughter of Charles & Mary was baptised at Stagsden on 7 July 1844

Death index of Mary Gammons Bedford RD in Mar 1851 - cannot see burial though

Charles Gammons, widower remarries Sara Brooks on 15 Oct 1855 at Stagsden

I am glad it wasn't just me, that is why I was after Lydias maiden name in case he was born before the marriage - then I found his baptism   ;D  https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:NK1V-4QH

....

That thought occurred to me in the shower this morning - that the Elizabeth in 1851 was really Elizabeth Gammons not Glidewell and therefore the Charles was very plausibly her father, Charles Gammons.

The clue which I had missed was Mary's death in  Q1 1851. I was also misled by the census record for 1851 HO 107/1751 page 9 which very clearly shows all members of the household having the same surname  viz. Glidwell.

I guess I need to be more careful interpreting census data when things don't add up on first reading.

Thank you for your help.
