Tower House Cottages, Bletchingley. Surrey
« on: Wednesday 24 February 16 01:10 GMT (UK) »
I am trying to find out who has lived at 33, 35 and 37 High Street, Bletchingley. It is an old hall house built in 1496 and prior to being numbered in 1968 was called 1, 2 & 3 Tower House Cottages. Does anyone have an info please?

Welcome to rootschat JumpingBean.  :)

What date range are you interested in the residents of Tower House Cottages? (Do you know exactly whereabouts on the High Street is/was?)

Added: I think I have found it on google maps - is it the lemon coloured building with blue door on the left and brown door on the right?

Added: Do you know why it was called Tower House Cottages? I don't see a tower of any description there today - perhaps in the past?  :-\

I think this might be it:

http://maps.nls.uk/geo/explore/sidebyside.cfm#zoom=21&lat=51.2405&lon=-0.1011&layers=176&right=BingHyb

Zoom out using mouse wheel to get better focus and for the modern map to appear in the right hand box.

I note the numbers you have are 33,35 and 37 but there only appear to be two doors fronting the High Street. (but there is room for a third in the middle). There also looks to be a lot more house at the rear. Do you know the original layout of the Cottages?

Thanks all for your welcome and speedy responses.
Yes, you have correctly identified it as the buttermilk coloured building with a blue door on the left and brown one on the right. The door to the third house (No 3) is round the back.
They were called Tower House Cottages because over the back (away from the A25) is Tower House (lived in for a short while by Frederick Rolls (of Rolls Royce)) and I think they were used at one time as staff quarters. There was also 4, 5 & 6 which were the other side of the drive and now 43, 45 & 47.
I think the whole building was owned by a family called Stockman who owned a building firm and they split it into three in perhaps the mid 1930's but I am not sure when they sold each part off except No 3 which was sold around 2005.
I know the owner of No 1 now and since 2000 but not before. Since approx. 1985, the owners of No 2 have been Smith and I know the owner of No 3 since approx. 2005. Between 1936 and 2005 a family called Dove rented No 3 and they brought up 11 children there.
That's all I know and I would love to have the house professionally researched but for the meantime I thought I would just see what I could find outside of those dates

That's very interesting.

Someone may be able to find the residents living there through the various censuses - from 1911 back every 10 years to 1841. It would be an interesting project.

Won't title deeds show previous owner's names?

Is it a listed building?

Added: Yes it is.  :)

The title deeds show very little earlier info and I don't have access to all of them. Yes it is Grade II listed

In 1901 census Tower House is occupied by Henry Allen Rolls, and servants.

But I have been through both schedules for Bletchingley and cant see any properties called Tower House Cottages or similar.
Generally the enumerators seem good at naming the properties, but seems these cottages are not down under a specific name.

Edmonds/Edmunds - mainly Sussex
DeBoo - London
Green - Suffolk
Parker - Sussex
Kemp - Essex
Farrington - Essex
Boniface - West Sussex
