Thank you for all the ideas.

I have found a probable census entry for the man's father in 1851, which gives his birth place as Yearsley ( which isn't far from Ampletforth).

I am wondering whether this is just a very badly copied entry by the enumerator.

Yes Yearsley is on the Genuki link I sent and is only two and a half miles away from Ampleforth.
