Download of Raw Data from Ancestry
« on: Sunday 28 February 16 15:04 GMT (UK) »
I decided to download this to send to ftDNA but I appear to have made a mess of it ???

Followed the instructions but think I made a mistake at the point where the option to "open or save" comes - put off by "open in Windows Explorer" {!!} I clicked it and now cannot findit anywhere in downloads or docs

Has anyone else done this - should I have saved the file ?

I use Firefox

Am I able to do it again

Kim

Hi Kim, usually when you download you click on save. If you've done a search via the search box on your computer and its not found then you can simply download it again. Even if it was there it would only mean you have it twice. I'm only self taught but I'm sure I'm correct.

I don't know what sort of file this is but if you get the prompt "open in Windows Explorer?" it may be a ZIP file and if you choose yes then you will see the filename(s) that are inside the ZIP file.

In Firefox you should have a look in the Downloads cache (thick down-facing arrow icon) and maybe it's still there.  If so you can open or save it.  If it opens as a list of files then open or save each one.

Thank you for your replies , I did not manage to find my initial download but was successful the second time BUT now I seem not to have uploaded it properly to ftDNA :-[

I do not think it is there although the message says "pending"

This was yesterday - used  "contact us"  to ask for help but no reply so far ,will I get a reply ?

Feeling pretty stupid !!

I am obviously not understanding how ftDNA works and am desperate for some help from someone who does ???

I have had no response  to my e-mail via "contact us"

Today when I visited the site to see if anything had happened the message was "Done" continue - which ended in my paying $39 for  "no matches"

I have looked through the "Forum" threads and none seem to help

Can anyone suggest what I should try next?

{I wanted to use ftDNA as I hope to persuade my brother to agree to a YDNA test}

Can I ask what is the timescale in all this. I have never had any problem with ftDNA and they did answer by query when I raised an issue after a few days. I cannot say how long it takes ftDNA to show results when you upload data but i know from when i uploaded data to Gedmatch that it took four days (not citing that as a typical length of time).

If anyone has any suggestions or leads as to his birthplace I would be interested to know. I have searched for it for years without success. Thank you.

Hello davidft

My initial attempt was the 28th Feb and the date I show as having "joined

The 2nd attempt {after help from here} was the 29th Feb and as I still felt unsure I e-mailed via the contact address later in the day on the 29th

Checked back yesterday and then today

OK I don't feel there is anything out of the ordinary. I would say give it a couple more days and if still no joy email them again on Saturday. Alternatively you can join their forum as some of their specialists read that and that may speed things up.

Good luck

If you are on Facebook find their page as they answered me reasonably quick when I had no reply from there site. They had just changed their way of reporting problems and got automated reply to use another place on the site and then still did n't hear after a few days. As soon as they became aware they sorted it out. If I did chase I would n't ever had got my results. My email address was put in with a v, part of my telephone number had either been taken down or I putted wrong and it was n't recognising my kit number.Fortunately when I got my results they straight away got me a password and there was enough info for me to feel happy that they were mine.
