16th Century Parish Registers
« on: Sunday 28 February 16 18:06 GMT (UK) »
Is anyone able to do some look ups in the parish registers of Wincanton and Bratton Seymour for some baptisms and marriages in the 16th century?

Thanks

Matt

Thanks for those. Unfortunately I'm looking for some events earlier than this. I think the events I'm after would fall between c1540 and 1590.

However these links might help me with some burials.

This link seems to be corrupted. All I get now is pop-ups and ads (for all sorts of stuff) when I try to navigate the link.

According to Somerset Heritage Centre catalogue the registers no longer exist for Bratton. I can't find Wincanton at the moment, the site is not responding, but I would guess the same is true and that all that remains for the period you seek are Bishops Transcripts. These are usually very patchy,

I'm afraid you won't find events at those dates. The dates I posted above relate to the earliest surviving registers, as notified by the FamilySearch wiki.

These registers are held at the record office in Taunton. Some transcriptions may be on FreeREG.

Thanks for those point which do clarify what I suspected. Thankfully though I've discovered a number of Wills and references to the family in Chancery and several other Wiltshire resources. These are so far allowing me to piece together a tree going back another generation, and I might be able to go back another. The Wills of the in-laws are also useful too. The Will of Augustine Abbott has already provided a lot of information including confirming the names of his siblings, and stating that he was born in Bratton Seymour (Edmond Abbott, his brother, also states that he was born there). Augustine's wife Elizabeth seems to have been previously married so by working on researching Augustine and his family I might be able to get an approximate idea when Augustine and his brothers were born. I do know that there is an Edmond Abbott and Ellis Abbott born in Salisbury in the 1550s, and that their father was named Robert. I don't know if there is a link yet but there could be.
